We’ve all seen the grainy and morbid Zapruder film of John F. Kennedy’s assassination in Dallas in 1963. Imagine what it must have been like to be an actual witness. Now, imagine you were one of those responsible for safeguarding JFK. “There are not many jobs where you can be a 100-percent failure, but being on the Kennedy detail was one of them,” says Gerald Blaine, a member of JFK’s Secret Service detail. The President’s security has never spoken publicly about the assassination. Until now. Blaine interviewed surviving members of the team for his book, The Kennedy Detail, cowritten with journalist Lisa McCubbin. In the process, he discovered the shared pain they bore in solitude all these years. “We never discussed the assassination with each other or our families until [a reunion] last year,” he says. “All agents felt the same guilt, anger, and failure. It was not until we started discussing the emotional aspect of the assassination did we start the healing process.” In addition to the agent experience, the book details aspects of the assassination that Blaine says have been misrepresented. “The major reason it was written is to save history from these bizarre theories being mistaken as fact.” Sorry Ollie Stone, Blaine supports the lone gunman premise.
