Choreographer Twyla Tharp once said, “Art is the only way to run away without leaving home.” So if you didn’t get a vacation at Christmas, go on a trip at this weekend’s Second Saturday Art Walk. Wynwood and the Design District’s galleries open at 7 p.m. Detroit is perhaps the only U.S. city that lives in the past. Once a bastion of industry, its now a place where trees grow in abandoned buildings and the diminishing population has returned to farming and raising livestock despite city ordinances. Artist Chris Dean examines his hometown’s unique state through impressive lenticular (hologram-like) images of the blighted city juxtaposed with Technicolor silhouettes of the future. See Dean’s “Transylvania” at Harold Golen Gallery, where the band Gold Dust Lounge will perform during the art walk.
