Bill Orcutt at Sweat Records December 28

Back when a president called Clinton ruled the White House, a band called Harry Pussy lorded over Miami's tiny noise rock scene. The explosively experimental unit first emerged in 1992 when guitarist Bill Orcutt and drummer Adris Hoyos decided to cause general musical mayhem for no real reason besides their own personal amusement. It was angry, brainy, and amazing, eventually earning the group fans from all over the world, including indie stars Sebadoh and Thurston Moore. But the band only lasted five years. And there would be no reunion tour.

Following the dissolution of Harry Pussy, Orcutt drifted off into a full decade of silence. He moved to San Francisco. He got married. He had kids. He wrote software for a living. And he rarely, if ever, touched a guitar. So it was a major surprise when the man suddenly resurfaced a year and a half ago with freshly cut seven-inch slab High Waisted, and an entire LP of new material, A New Way to Pay Old Debts.

Just like his classic '90s stuff, Orcutt's recent output ripples and rages with angular, skillfully erratic axe work. But this time, he isn't choking jazzy no-wave noise from an electric guitar. Instead, he's wrestling with a half-mangled acoustic Kay, blurting out a highly advanced, atonal strain of improvised blues. Go see the man shred this Tuesday at Sweat.
