For 64 years, the King Orange Jamboree Parade traveled up and down Biscayne Boulevard in downtown Miami every New Year’s Eve. But the expensive and poorly run event disappeared after 2002, never to return. Luckily, by that time, junior was ready to take over where daddy left off. Now running for 62 years and counting, the 2011 Junior Orange Bowl Paradebrings its procession of floats, marching bands, and go-carts full of those kooky Mahi Shriners back to Miracle Mile in Coral Gables on Sunday. This year’s grand marshal is Curious George, and the parade theme is “It’s a Jungle Out There.” Ron Magill from Zoo Miami lends legitimacy to the proceedings, which also include numerous horse troops, Lil’ John’s Fire Wheelie truck, and 501 Legion of Stars Wars fans (expect a small army of storm troopers and clones). As is the tradition, marching bands from schools that participate in the Orange Bowl football game also perform, which means parade-goers will witness the off-color antics of the renowned Leland Stanford Jr. University marching band.
