Youth Served and Swung

In the late Nineties, long before becoming the greatest professional tennis player of all time, a pimply-faced Roger Federer played in the Junior Orange Bowl (JOB) International Tennis Championship and won. Earlier in that decade, 16-year-old Tiger Woods did the same at the JOB golf tournament — years before he was running from an enraged, golf-club-swinging wife and gaggle of hoochie mommas. Actually, it’s difficult to find top professionals in either sport who haven’t participated in JOB junior championships. Held every year in Miami, both tournaments have been around since the early Sixties as proving ground for the best junior talent from around the world. Once again, the latest cadre of local, national, and international tennis and golf wunderkinds will be displaying their skills at the Junior Orange Bowl International Championships. The tennis finals for boys and girls 14 and under, and boys 12 and under, will be held at the University of Miami Tennis Center starting at 9 a.m. on Thursday. The golf championship starts on Sunday at the Biltmore Golf Course (1200 Anastasia Ave., Coral Gables), with the final round played on December 30. Bring a pen and notepad, and be the first to ask these future superstars for their autograph.
