A camera follows as a man and woman finally reach Chichen Itza, the Mayan ruin in the middle of Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula. But they still have to make it through Nogales to reach the light at the end of this dark tunnel, the U.S. It’s not what you think. This is a story about a different kind of illegal alien. In Monsters, a NASA probe containing extraterrestrial spores accidentally crashes in the middle of Mexico and spawns a civilization of menacing, octopus-like creatures. The Mexican border town strip becomes a deserted, infected zone. Think District 9, but with more chimichangas and burritos. By the end of the film, a photo-journalist and American tourist must navigate the hairy path towards the U.S. border. Monstershad its U.S. premier earlier this year at the SXSW 2010 Film Festival. Brit Gareth Edwards wrote, directed, shot, and even created the special effects for the film. And this isn’t just another scary movie. There’s a touch of nuance about just how evil the Other actually is (were those two aliens just dancing? Having sex?). See Monsterswhen it opens at Coral Gables Art Cinema this Friday.
