Noche Buena, Rumbero-Style

’Twas the night before Christmas and all through the casa, not a creature was stirring, caramba, que pasa? Or so goes the old Cuban version. And do you know what else Cubans (really, all Latinos) have their own version of? Christmas in general. Because if it’s the night before Christmas, AKA Noche Buena, and not even the mice are stirring, you’re definitely not in a Hispanic home. Whether you’re from Cuba or Puerto Rico, Colombia or Venezuela, you know that Christmas Day is for opening presents and nursing a hangover. Noche Buena on Christmas Eve is the main event. La Covacha knows this as well as anyone. And that’s why it’s helping celebrate Friday night in style, with the annual Gran Rumba de Noche Buena. DJs Johnny M and Lazardi will provide the soundtrack to the rumba, and there will also be live music courtesy of Venezuelan pop singers Beethzart and Toto from Maracaibo, or as they’re collectively known, Caibo.
