Though people often access memories through words (love letters, diaries, etc.), a physical recollection of images, smells, and sounds packs a more powerful emotional punch. Graphic memoirs are unique in that they allow readers the intense experience an author’s memories through rich illustrations. In the vein of the American Splendor series, though with a thoroughly different tone, Martin Lemelman’s Two Cents Plain: My Brooklyn Boyhoodtells the story of growing up behind a candy store in the Fifties surrounded by colorful neighbors. The son of Holocaust survivors, Lemelman details the immigrant experience with a deft hand and keen eye. The successful illustrator, who has drawn for over 30 children’s books and for publications such as Sesame Street magazine, will make an appearance at Books & Books.
