We Built This City

We were sort of jealous when local art collective FriendsWithYou put on its interactive display "Rainbow City" at Toronto's Queen's Park during the Luminato Festival. Sam Borkson and Arturo "Tury" Sandoval really haven't done an interactive display in Miami since "Fun House" debuted at Scope Art Fair in 2008. So can you blame us for feeling a little neglected? But we've learned that "Rainbow City" will be traveling through the glass prism known as Art Basel Miami Beach to make its Miami debut December 1 to 5. It will take over the former home of Design Miami/, the lot located at 3800 NE First Ave. In addition to FWY's involvement, Dacra, O.H.W.O.W., and Paper Magazine are lending a helping hand. "Rainbow City" is described as "an environmental installation addressing the potency of interaction, ritual, and play" and is "inspired by Holi, a festival effectuated by Hindu followers throwing brightly colored water and powder at each other." So will Miami's version of "Rainbow City" be a carbon-copy of Toronto's? According FriendWithYou's Xavier Burt, it will be much different than Toronto and there will be more elements added. While we wait and see what Sam and Tury come up with, here's a look at "Rainbow City" at Queen's Park.
