You've heard about petrified forests, but in Miami we have something just as cool – a fossilized reef. One of only a couple such reefs in the world, the fossilized reef in the Bear Cut Preserve in Crandon Park is believed to be the remnants of long dead mangroves. And though the reef itself is no longer alive, the shallow waters around it are teaming with life, including spotted eagle rays, sea cucumbers, juvenile fish and yeah, even an occasional nurse shark. Chances are you’ve driven past the fossilized reef many times on your way to Key Biscayne without a clue of its presence. But the reef is quickly becoming the star attraction of the Sea Kayak & Snorkel Adventureat Crandon Park. For $70, the guides at the Crandon Park Visitors & Nature Center will take you on a three-and-a-half hour tour, which explores the natural beauty of the island that we usually only visit during the Ericsson Open. The cost includes all the equipment (including snorkeling and kayaking gear), but you should bring plenty of water, sunblock, and some snacks as once you get in the water you won’t be able to munch on anything except seaweed.
Starts: Dec. 13. Daily, 9:30 a.m., 2010
