Dressing David Bowie

The British might not be known for their delicate palettes, but they certainly have a way with fashion. In the ’60s and ’70s, the best dressed of London — basically Mick Jagger, David Bowie, and Marianne Faithfull — bought their raddest duds at Barbara Hulanicki’s store, Biba. After the shop closed, Hulanicki continued to work as an illustrator and built a successful career as an interior and exterior designer, using her talents to sustain art deco chic while living in Miami Beach. Her playful and delightful illustrations will be featured in “Flash,” an exhibit at Calix Gustav Gallery during Art Basel. Both modern and classic in their appeal, the artist’s drawings are certain to please even the most cynical Baselite. Opening this Tuesday, the exhibit will run through February 4. Admission is free. The gallery is open Tuesday through Saturday from noon to 5 p.m. The opening reception will take place from 6:30 to 9 p.m. December 4 with complimentary cocktails and music by DJ Lazaro Amaral, followed by an afterparty featuring a screening of Beyond Biba: A Portrait of Barbara Hulanicki.
Tuesdays-Saturdays, noon. Starts: Nov. 30. Continues through Feb. 4, 2010
