Opera can be brutal. In Turandot, set in ancient China, a cold-hearted bitch of a princess says that before she will marry, her suitor must correctly answer three riddles. Of the many who try, those who fail are beheaded. We won’t spoil the surprise, but later in the story, a sexy Asian broad gets tortured and then knifes herself to death — all in the name of love. You can see the bloody mess at the Adrienne Arsht Center’s Ziff Ballet Opera House this Saturday at 7 p.m. for the opening of Florida Grand Opera’s 70th season. If you’re a big baller, you can also partake in Saturday’s Night of the Golden Dragon gala, which includes a private champagne reception, two silent auctions, an intermission reception, dinner served onstage, and drinking and dancing with the cast.
