There’s more to Spanish cinema than Pedro Almodóvar’s romantic visions — i.e., Penélope Cruz and Javier Bardem gettin’ freaky in an Andalusian olive grove. Consider the grittier flicks featured in the weeklong Festival of New Spanish Cinema, which opens at the Tower Theater this Thursday with an 8:30 p.m. screening of Yo, También (Me Too). The offbeat rom-com was nominated for Sundance’s Grand Jury Prize and took home the Audience Award at the Rotterdam Film Festival. Arrive at 7:30 for the opening-night reception. The big highlight from this traveling film festival, however, is the Miami Beach Cinematheque-sponsored screening of Estigmas (Stigmata) at the Raleigh Hotel (1775 Collins Ave., Miami Beach) Friday at 8:30 p.m. Filmmaker Adán Aliaga will be there to discuss his debut film, which is based on the Italian cult comic book and stars Spain’s champion shot-putter. Afterward, party down at the W Hotel’s Soleà (2201 Collins Ave., Miami Beach). Other high points in the fest, which runs through October 28, are the films Tres Días con la Família(Three Days With the Family), about the charms of the bourgeoisie; After, a messy love triangle set in Seville; and La Isla Interior(The Island Inside), which revels in awkward family gatherings. Tickets cost $5 to $15, and a series pass costs $45. Visit pragda.com.
