Animal House

Sara Gruen's newest novel, Ape House, tells the story of a group of primates on prime time, and we're not talking about the Situation and Pauly D. The main characters are bonobos, little chimps that grow up communicating with their caretakers through American Sign Language. After an explosion rocks their home, they escape and are found by a porno producer who showcases their romantic lives on the tube. Reality TV at its worst. Gruen is best known for 2006's Water for Elephants, which every mommy's book club devoured last year. Both a touching and amusing story, it recounts an old man's memories of working in a traveling circus. Water for Elephants will be made into a movie next year and features bloodsucking Brit heartthrob Robert Pattinson and legally blond Reese Witherspoon. Gruen will be at Temple Judea at 7:30 p.m. this Thursday. The event is free, but tickets are required through Books & Books. Call 305-442-4408 or visit booksandbooks.com.
