As Duke Ellington said, “Jazz has always been like the kind of man you wouldn’t want your daughter to associate with.” This weekend, WDNA 88.9 FM has dedicated a whole film festival to such characters hopped up on hooch and horns. The 14th annual Miami Jazz Film Festival will open Thursday with Candido: Hand of Fire, a documentary about great Cuban percussionist Candido Camero, who will accept the key to the city from Mayor Tomás Regalado. The tribute begins at 7:15 p.m. at the Tower Theater and is followed by an afterparty at the WDNA Jazz Gallery (2921 Coral Way, Miami).

This Friday, catch the Florida premiere of Flags, Feathers, and Lies, a mediation on New Orleans’s African-American Mardi Gras Indians as told by jazz saxophonist Donald Harrison Jr. And Saturday, see Deconstructing Dad, a film about Raymond Scott, who was the Brian Eno of the Big Band Era, and Charlie Haden: Rambling Boy, about the upright bassist who often accompanied Ornette Coleman. Afterward, head to the WDNA Jazz Gallery for a tribute to saxophonist Wilton “Bogey” Gaynair. Sunday will feature films about Dutch drummer Han Bennink and free-jazz saxophonist Albert Ayler, as well as one about the genre’s gospel roots, Rejoice and Shout.
Sept. 30-Oct. 3, 7:15 p.m., 2010
