Tell It on the Mountain

Now that our school days are long behind us, our memories are weak. Dates and names become more difficult to remember. To help retain some semblance of brainpower in a vapid, Jersey Shore world, catch the latest event hosted by the University of Wynwood, an organization devoted to advancing contemporary poetics. To help us with our continuing education, founder P. Scott Cunningham invited poet and essayist John D’Agatato Miami after catching his recent reading in Boca. Inspired by his mother’s move to Las Vegas, D’Agata’s newest book, About a Mountain, explores both the government’s plans to move nuclear waste to nearby Yucca Mountain and a teenage boy’s suicidal jump from the Stratosphere, the city’s tallest structure. This Thursday, listen to D’Agata read from his book at Locust Projects (155 NE 38th St., Miami). The Books & Books-sponsored event is free, runs from 7 to 8:30 p.m., and includes a Q&A session and book signing.
Thu., Sept. 23, 7 p.m., 2010
