How many human beings can safely surf on a floating cluster of liquid bubbles? If a new group show at the Dorsch Gallery is any kind of sea test, our thoroughly unscientific estimate might be 24 artists and one curator.

Loosely borrowing its concept from microstructural experiments by Nobel laureates Sir William Lawrence Bragg and John Nye, “Bubble Raft” closely packs a surplus of sculptural objects into the gallery’s indoor and outdoor exhibition spaces. Substance shapers Bhakti Baxter, Shoplifter, and Audrey Hasen Russell add chrome mysteries on pink platforms, multicolor totems, and two-by-fours adorned with gold leaf and rhinestones to the cluster. The remaining bubble mass comes from scene vet Jay Hines, “Weird Miami” alum Justin H. Long, recent NWSA grad Sleeper, and 18 others. The raft is packed.
Tuesdays-Saturdays. Starts: Sept. 4. Continues through Oct. 2, 2010
