The Florida Marlins are notorious for trading away good players just as they’re hitting their stride and making a name for themselves. Usually, the Marlins get a handful of minor-leaguers for their trouble. And while it infuriates the fans to see this happen every year, the powers that be point to the potential of these new prospects. Two weeks ago, we saw more of the same as the Fish allowed outfielder Cody Ross to be snatched up by the San Francisco Giants. The difference this time around: The Marlins received absolutely nothing in return — no players, no prospects, not even a bag of delicious peanuts. Marlins president of baseball operations Larry Beinfest told the press that Ross was allowed to go to San Fran because the team didn’t think it would be able to re-sign him in the off-season. He also said it didn’t matter because the team had fallen out of the playoff race. So just to recap: The Marlins allowed one of their most popular players to get away, got nothing in return for him, and gave up on the 2010 season. Nicely done, gentlemen. The Fish will host the Atlanta Braves this Friday at Sun Life Stadium.
