Florida gave women the right to vote in 1969, 50 years after the ratification of the 19th Amendment. Our state’s treatment of ladies improved exponentially, though, when one feisty feminist took up residence in Coral Gables in the ’50s. Roxcy Bolton demanded that women get equal pay and access to the same executive lunchrooms as men, and that those bastards at NOAA stop naming hurricanes only for women. Bolton, however, was a perfect storm of women’s activism. She was instrumental in the National Organization for Women, founding its Miami chapter as well as crisis centers for SoFla women. To commemorate Women’s Equality Day, as well as the 90th anniversary of the 19th Amendment, HistoryMiami will host Celebrating Women! this Thursday. Journalists Michael Putney and Molly Turner will sing the praises of Bolton, who will follow with a Q&A. With women still earning just 80 cents to every dollar a man makes, we look forward to hearing her outrage. (That amounts to about $700,000 over a woman’s career. Are you pissed off yet?) Bolton memorabilia will be on display from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., and the presentation begins at 11 a.m.
