Phoenix, Arizona: America's kidnapping capital is brutal

Maria was drifting off to sleep on the bedroom floor. She could hear women getting raped in the next room. Except she didn't hear screams; she heard the laughter of male guards.

This "torture closet" was used to brutally abuse a Phoenix kidnapping victim whose family could not pay his ransom.

The women had been drugged by their rapists, who had done the same to Maria as soon as she walked into the house. They forced her to swallow a red liquid and handed her some white, chalky pills. She drank the liquid and tucked the pills on the side of her mouth, but they were slowly dissolving.

The drugs were beginning to deaden her senses.

Maria had arrived at the modest three-bedroom house in west Phoenix several days earlier in the back of a white van. She was one of about a dozen other immigrants who had hired coyotes to smuggle them into the United States. They each paid the human smugglers about $1,800 to guide them safely through the treacherous Arizona desert.

Their guides instead delivered them to other, more vicious coyotes. The kidnappers demanded another $1,700 apiece for Maria and the 12 others, including two young boys.

The armed captors had tried to lock up Maria in the same room with the other women. She was gripped by fear as she watched one of the guards stripping off the women's clothes.

Maria's husband argued with the kidnappers, telling them that she was sick, that he needed to keep an eye on her. Rather than hassle with a couple of the pollos (smugglers' slang for their cargo), the guards allowed them to stay together.

Along with the men, the smugglers stashed her in the master bedroom.

When it was safe, she pulled the pills out of her mouth and gave them to her husband. He slipped them into the pocket of his whitewashed jeans.

She looked around the bare bedroom at the men sitting on the floor. They were tired and worn. There was a large piece of plywood nailed over the window and a deadbolt on the door that locked from the outside. There was no escape.

The pollos had come from poverty-stricken towns in Mexico and Guatemala in search of a better existence. Maria says she and her husband had hoped to find work; back home in Mexico, jobs were scarce, and the lucky few who found them earned a meager 100 pesos for a full day's work — less than $7.80 a day.

The promise of making living wages is what drove Maria and the others to walk through the desert for eight days, crawl through tunnels, and move from camp to camp, car to car, and from one band of coyotes to another within the same smuggling operation. Money was also the motivation behind the kidnappers' demands that Maria, her husband, and the other victims come up with large ransoms for their release.

The captives called their families back home, or relatives in Arizona, to plead for money they knew the families probably didn't have. Days went by as Maria's family worked to come up with more cash. The impatient guards threatened to beat their captives and dump their dead bodies in the desert if the money didn't show up.

Terrified and confused, Maria was allowed to leave the room only when it was her turn to help cook for the guards or to clean the house. One of the other women told Maria that they had been in the house for more than a month. The women talked quietly while they prepared meals for the hostages — a bean burrito, a few ramen noodles, or a boiled egg split among four people. The immigrants weren't given anything to drink; they slurped water from a bathroom sink.

Maria and the other captives had no idea that a specialized team of police detectives, analysts, and U.S. immigration agents had begun a rescue mission to release them and arrest their kidnappers.

An anonymous caller had tipped off Phoenix police about the home where the illegal immigrants were being held. The tip was passed on to members of a police task force called IIMPACT (Illegal Immigration Prevention Apprehension Co-op Team). The countywide effort to dismantle smuggling rings, arrest violent criminals, and rescue hostages includes detectives from the Arizona Department of Public Safety and the Phoenix Police Department and agents from ICE (U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement).

Investigators spent three days deciphering the tipster's information before finally pinpointing the house.

Once the suburban prison was in their sights, they arranged for a SWAT team to raid the house, and they arrested four suspected kidnappers and rescued the hostages, including Maria.

"The looks on their faces — they just lit up," Phoenix Police Sgt. Harry Reiter, who supervises IIMPACT detectives, says of the rescued hostages. "They were so grateful. They didn't care that [they would have to] go back south of the border; they just wanted out of the kidnappers' hold."

Although removed from the coyotes' clutches, the pollos were hardly set free. They were taken into police custody, given food and beverages, and interviewed by detectives.

When it was her turn, Maria tugged nervously at the sleeves of her shirt as she answered questions inside a small cubicle. Her voice was barely audible, and she stared at the floor. Her answers were void of detail, but the detective extracted information from her to build a case against the coyotes. They spoke in Spanish as a reporter listened.

Most of the people that is abuse is because once they are in USA they choose not to pay the coyotes. This is one more of the reasons why the politics have to blame Hispanic people for everything bad happening here this poor state at least is number one in something..this is one of the worst places to live in America after the crisis.

  • Robert Hall 08/27/2010 3:54:00 AM

Mexico itself has a problem with people wanting to get into Mexico. Coyotes are at work in Guatemala too, taking people to the Mexican border. To pay coyotes, people must have saved some money, maybe their entire life savings. The truly destitute can't do this. Mexico is only one corner of a big world of people wanting to escape their circumstances, and the U.S. is not the only country feeling this pressure. The urban poor are the fastest growing segment of the global population. Go to almost any big third world city and you find the shanties of people who have migrated in from the countryside because they can no longer make it there. In town they live on the "flea market" economy. Few of them could ever pay a coyote to make a run at any border. When people are desperate, stopping this migration is like trying to stop the ocean tides.

  • wtdp 08/19/2010 5:43:00 AM

The tiny super-rich elite of Mexico is glad to send as many of it's unproductive poor across the border as possible, where we provide for them and they enrich Mexico with their remittances. They could give a damn about their own strong people who should be their pride and their lifeblood. Shame on Mexico.

  • Elizabeth 08/17/2010 2:53:00 AM

That is so sad. I hope the coyotes get more then a slap on the hand. These are human beings. I am opposed to illegal immigrants coming into this country but I can't imagine what they endured to come here. I just don't understand why Mexico, with all its natural resources, can't help their own people and let this happen to them.

  • Elsie 08/16/2010 11:54:00 PM

What has this world come to??? The need to kidnap inncocent people for more money than what they have already dished out. Isn't enough, enough. What a horrible place Arizona is to live in. I wouldn't even want to visit this horrible place.

  • Barry 08/16/2010 5:13:00 PM

Seems like a good reason to stop illegals from trying to come here ILLEGALLY.....

  • Chicken Grits and Watermelon 08/16/2010 7:44:00 AM

Personally, I feel enriched by the fact that I am a brother from the ghetto who (because of a very attentive and patient neighbor and often-times babysitter from Cuba) can speak Spanish with near native fluency. I think Latin culture is great and it's only inevitable that those of us living in states bordering Latin America and the Spanish speaking Carribean will be affected by that proximity. Once we get past our prejudices, we will be able to see all of the positive influences Latin culture has had on our respective communities. I know that South Florida is a richer, more vibrant place because of its Hispanic flavor. I am angered and hurt by all of my fellow citizens who are so closed-minded and hateful toward refugees. Not just from Latin America, but from any country where people are suffering. We are a nation of immigrants. It bears remembering that the only "Real Americans" are Indian tribes, one of which I am a descendant. The rest of you are immigrants, from the people aboard the Mayflower to all the rest who followed. We hold ourselves high as a model of peace and prosperity for the rest of the world. We dare other countries to try to emulate our model. However we can't extend a welcoming hand to people whose own homes are in economic or political chaos. I understand that we can't allow everyone into the U.S. who wants to enter; but that doesn't mean we can't invite those immigrants who are here illegally to stay... provided they are a good and decent citizens. Remember, the definition of what it means to be an American will be in constant change for as long as our country exists. Anthropological experts who specialize in human migration have already said that Hispanics will make up the majority of the minority population in this country. They were right. Others have said that in 50 years, the average citizen will have at least one Hispanic descendant. They're closer to being right. The neighbors we shun today will be the majority who sets our political agenda tomorrow. Let's show them a little love, respect and courtesy.

Every fanatic Christian will be out ,trying to save these illegal scumbags as they take jobs from legal immigrants. and Americans. Do not feed into these "poor" PEOPLE LOOKING FOR AN EASY WAY OUT OF A SHIT COUNTRY LIKE MEXICO. IF I LIVED THERE I WOULD GO TO ANOTHER COUNTRY ALSO. WHAT HAPPENED TO SPAIN. COLUMBIA,VENEZULA,ALL THOSE COUNTRIES THAT THEY CALL BROTHERS. TOTAL BULL. NO ONE WANTS THESE LOW LIFES .BECAUSE THEY ARE THE MOST IGNORANT, STUPID GROUP OF MORONS IN THE WORLD

  • Robert 08/16/2010 12:06:00 AM

What does "imigration Reform" has to do with the kidnapping? If you grant legal status to all those who crossed illegally before, or you do is encourage other Marias to risk their lives in the hope that someday they will be granted residency inthe US. You will make it easier for the Kidnappers to find victims, and you will have another 12Million illegals in a few years and we will start again thrying to figure out what to do with them, or how to "Legalize" them.

  • carlos 08/15/2010 6:36:00 PM

this is the reason why the US needs strict immigration laws. now we Americans have to split the bill on medical care for these people instead of taking care of our own needy. I say if they want to come to America they should do so threw legal channels. they say their needy how the hell did they get $1800. to pay the coyotes???? these are Mexican there Mexico problem keep them there so they don't become ours.

What this country needs is intelligent people to understand the difference between people in need and criminals.

  • Laura 08/15/2010 12:22:00 AM

You know what I find quite sad? The lack of empathy toward people trying to come to this country for the purpose of a better life. For all you Americans feeling as if this is what immigrants deserve for sneaking over the border, you are more an animal than the smugglers causing harm. Why don't you use your frontal lobe and act human for at least 3 minutes. Could you imagine living in a country where there is no opportunity but, traveling 500 miles might allow your child to have a decent education and future... OMG HOW DARE PEOPLE RISK THERE LIFE FOR THAT... HOW DARE THEY!!!(give me a break)Just because we as nations have yet to come up with an efficient plan to keep these soulless criminals out, does not mean we should easily place blame on people searching for a better life. Would you not do the same for you and your family? And might I remind you, unless you are a 100% Native American (which I doubt) then your family was too, considered as immigrants looking for better opportunity. And Tony, If wanting a life where progress is possible earns someone the title "Criminal", then I highly suggest for you to up a dictionary to re-read the definition of the word. I truly hope you folks do not call your self Christians.

  • tony 08/14/2010 7:16:00 PM

a lot of propaganda in attempt to get us to sympathize with illegal immigrants, its criminals abusing criminals.

  • coco 08/14/2010 5:17:00 AM

We can all avoid this horror, doing something very simple PROTECT THE BORDERS. Then, there will not be smuglers or victims from Mexico and Guatemala. There will be no reporter telling us this story so he can continue promote the agenta of this new administration. Obama needs the vote of 11 million illegals. He knows it, we know it, the world know it. The border will not protected. It's a political game. Sad day for Americans.

  • mike 08/14/2010 5:01:00 AM

to Monica Alonzo, This story although sad, was caused by been involved in illegal activities by both the cayotes and the illegal aliens. monica why don't you campaign in mexico and tell them that there are no jobs here in the united states, that they will place a burden on those hardworking people who have to pay taxes to support them and their kins, tell to stop been selfish. to stay home and make a change.

  • Bob Johnson 08/13/2010 5:36:00 PM

Boo-hoo, pass me a tissue. Marie and her co-illegal aliens deserve the terror bestowed upon them for their illegal entry into the USA. When you like with lice and fleas, your get lice and fleas. If the New Times wants to help these people then they should publish this article in Spanish and post it to every newspaper in Central America and Mexico. Other than that illegal aliens need to STFO of the US illegally or pay the consequences.

  • marie 08/13/2010 8:15:00 AM

if the law would come down on employers who hire these people they would not have jobs to come to. just as we in america have rules about pay scales , why not mexico i think the mexican government should start taking care of their own people, give them wages they can live on then maybe this awful problem will ease up. to the politicians who fight the new tough laws you are fools. wake up the problem won't go away if we reward the people coming in illegally.

  • Gendo Ikari 08/13/2010 2:22:00 AM

Hey Dan... those "corrupt, ineffective piece of dog excrement politicians" include Mexican Presidente Fox himself. Who actively encourages criminals to do as much damage at the American border as possible, to kill border guards, to sell drugs, and to immigrate freely. It's amusing the media felt the need to call out Arizona about this s*it. Arizona has been the only state trying to STOP this. With no help at all from the Feds. Perhaps a similar story about how California SUPPORTS the Coyotes, and how their racist La Raza mayor of Los Angeles encourages boycotts and sanctions against anyone who tries to stop this traffic?

  • mimi 08/12/2010 7:46:00 PM

I'm so tired of this,Anyways I think they should already close the borders, do everything they have to do so that the only descent hardworking people who come here for a better way of living wont be able to enter the U.S. I am disgusted by the way the U.S is handling this .How come they only target the Mexicans, South and Central American People and not the Italians/Jews/Chinese/Arabs/etc etc send them home as well... If you know about history, then you should know that Arizona and some other parts of the U.S was part of Mexico before.

  • Nobama 08/12/2010 6:01:00 PM

And BO (he stinks) obama says our boarders are the safest they have been in 20 years. Vote the socialist/communist bastards out of office this November and in 2012.

  • Dan 08/12/2010 1:05:00 AM

Its a shame, US should not punish these poor people by reneging basic human dignities for the fear of being deported. What the US should do is put pressure in these countries, Mexico, etc. (at least the one that immediately border the US) and demand that their corrupt, ineffective piece of dog excrement politicians, and group of "Sub-Human" "Wealthy" Mexican's, and central american's do more to distribute the wealth more evenly in their own country rather than hoarding it for themselves. This is causing that poor Mexican nationals to cross the border in search of a better life. If you want to "solve" the immigration issue, you need to put pressure to where it will make a difference, not on a victim that is getting dehumanized by both countries. Too bad that US politicians are in bed with these rich assholes.(yeah Bush, among others)

  • junior 08/11/2010 7:44:00 PM

many of my aquantances are out of work due to the slowdown, i do believe in help americans first, why is bill gates helping africa and not us? the immigration issue of course is not black and white allthough i prefer to think like that, there is so much grey area, something must be done to deal with the isue that is fair, we are a nation that tyically sets the standard for the rest of the world? globalization we seem to of created helps the corporations profit but does nothing to save our jobs, so many countries have laws that protect them against infiltration or loss of jobs, many people get on the buy american bandwagon, in reality it is the truth, if we stop buying made in china or india, and even go so far as to go back to buying from the local mom and pop stores it is a circle of life that will put USA back as the economic leader, but we just keep buying overseas products, sending our money and jobs to them. Funny thing i have went where the jobs are and the money ( overseas ), i want to come home, to the country my grandfather was so proud to call home.

  • mickey lane 08/11/2010 7:34:00 PM

Once apprehended those poor excuses of human beings should be sent to Afghanistan. As we well know 'they' understand these type of human degradation - they practice it every day. I, for one, have no qualms sending/ drpping them over Kabul. Actually it will distract the Afghany's from our troops so they can finish our job & come home.

  • junior 08/11/2010 7:11:00 PM

as a tax payer, i would pay a reward or bounty for the these kidnappers to be arrested and executed for the kidnaping and torture. i work in the middle east, and believe me, you dont want to go to jail here, lets make the punishment fit the crime, torture and murder should be met with the harshest punishment.

  • smash44 08/11/2010 6:06:00 PM

Good. Who cares? I couldn't care less. Talk to racists obama and holder who are trying in vain to derail the illegal immigration law in Arizona. They'll help these poor, hapless, helpless victims.

  • nestor 08/11/2010 5:24:00 PM

too bad every slimy lying self serving politician can't be subjected to the same horrible treatment as the many illegals are.....maybe then they would substitute their f...ing rhetoric for real solutions...instead of using the issue for their own gain....this goes from the pres on down....absolutely unacceptable for this to occur in this country!!!

  • celenesf 08/11/2010 10:25:00 AM

    SO where is sheriff Arpaio?

  • Jonathan Willis 08/11/2010 9:42:00 AM

This article sheds some light on a HUGE underlying issue with immigration law and the effects of immigration on the immigrants. It's unfortunate these people "attempt" to cross given the perils involved; harsh terrain, unbearable heat, dehydration, long voyage, entrust worthy smugglers, and lack of legal ability. The protection of a nation's identity, workforce, and population is NECESSARY, however there needs to be a distinction of class between laborers and criminals, instead of collectively labeling them. This novel idea would sounds something along the lines of, oh I don't, Immigration Reformation. Immigrants DO NOT come here because they HAVE a job. They come because business owners are willing to hire them. The illegals are a symptom of a greater problem. Unenforceable of labor laws. Cheap labor has always been around in America. Child labor, scabs, anti-union shops, Wal-mart, etc. And honestly, if your looking for a job that barely pays a living wage... you'll probably be competing with a MACHINE that comes of a production line, build by other machines. Get educated and make your self irreplaceable. I'm not super smart but I know damn well the day I can be replaced by some one off the back of a truck who just walked through the desert or a machine... that its time for me to better MY SELF and look inward instead of pointing the finger. If Section 3 of the 4th Geneva Convention had already been passed, that would still be Mexico. But I guess the Native Americans also cant ask for their land back as well since they sold their "houses" too. Perhaps everyone could use a refresher compliments of Wikipedia on the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo (that's the treaty that was after the Mexican American War) "The treaty provided for the Mexican Cession of 1.36 million km² (525,000 square miles) to the United States in exchange for US$15 million (equivalent to $380 million today)." (That's a good deal, it even includes Napa Valley!) "...Mexico lost 55% of its pre-war territory.[4]" (That might have affected the future a little) "Despite assurances to the contrary, property rights of Mexican citizens were often not honored by the U.S. in accordance with modifications to and interpretations of the treaty" "The U.S. also agreed to take over US$3.25 million (equivalent to $81.4 million today) in debts Mexico owed to American citizens." (One victory for the Mexicans)

  • Jimmie 08/11/2010 2:02:00 AM

Send them back where they came from with the message that this is what can happen if you try to come to America Illegally. Mexico, Central and South America must be the most pathetic disgusting places to live on the globe. If not, why would people leave in droves and endure these hardships? How bad can it really be? Maybe America should just Annex Mexico. BTW, I'm looking for a living wage here in Miami, unfortunately I don't speak spanish which eliminates me from most jobs in my profession, and since there are so many illegals here I can't even get a warehouse job (requires spanish). Im sure Im in the minority here, but I believe all illegal immigration should be stopped and all illegal immigrants already here should be sent back home. And yes, no matter what it costs. In the long run it is best for "Our" country. Maybe not what is best for "Mexico" or "Central America" but it would be best for "America" Employers would be forced to pay us a living wage as the supply of cheap labor would disappear. Hospitals like Jackson would loose less money, the federal government would save money on food stamps and other give aways, more local income would be spent locally (illegals send billions back home each year)Schools will be less crowded. I am for immigration, but what this country needs is immigrants that can come here and start businesses and hire Americans, (English speaking).

  • JAE 08/11/2010 2:01:00 AM

I feel very sad for all the people that must go through this. But reality is that the United States has the right to protect its borders. Every other country in the world has strict immigration laws. So why can't the U.S protect itself from people that did not have permission to come here in the first place. Instead of criticizing the U.S, maybe you should criticize the countries from were most of these immigrants come from for having such a corrupt government. It disgust me to hear about Mexico getting involved in our laws, when they have one of the highest murder and kidnapping rates in the world. Maybe they should worry about their problems first before they meddle in Arizona's laws.

  • Dee65 08/11/2010 1:23:00 AM

I'm sorry but the victims in this story are part of the problem. They "feed" the coyotes by paying them KNOWING what their fate may be. I've heard these stories since I can remember and I've been in this country for 38 years. This is nothing knew and it will not stop because WE (hispanics) feed into the promises these so called coyotes make. If I'm REALLY poor in Mexico, Guatemala, etc. then where do you get $1,800 to cross the border? These stories are known in these countries so the victims know exactly what can happen to them and yet they insist on coming in illegally. I do feel sorry for them because their own people rob and kill them and all for what? I tell every illegal immigrant I meet not to trust ANY other Hispanic who makes promises for money, all they want is to take advantage of them. I do translations for free and I help those I know for FREE but I know people out there who charge $700 to fill out immigration papers making all kinds of promises or $100-$200 for driving the wives of illegal immigrants in jail to see their husbands. Its a shame that these type of crimes are done by our own. Illegal immigration needs to be stopped and those who want to be in this country need to follow the law. Yes, Mexicans in particular have been here since before the U.S. became a country but its not THEIR land anymore, it was sold and bought and unfortunately just like when you sell a house you can't go back because it has a new owner.

  • Kathy Hunt 08/10/2010 11:59:00 PM

This is so sad. Horrible. I am crying just reading this. Can you ever imagine anyone having to live thru this? Something needs to be done.
