Mixtape of the Week: The Game's Brake Lights

The Game and Cool & Dre have a long history together. "Hate It or Love It," from 2005, was the first collaboration among the three. Since then, they've frequently worked together, with Cool & Dre landing placements on all of the Game's subsequent albums.

Fast-forward to 2010, and the Game has continued to work on the release of his next album, The Red. Numerous setbacks, recording delays, and other hurdles have hindered the album from seeing the light of day. However, while the public waits on the Game's next opus, mixtapes keep flooding the Internet.

With their past relationship in mind, the rapper recruited Cool & Dre to executive-produce a new mixtape called Brake Lights. DJ Skee is on the boards handling mixing and hosting duties, but overall, Cool & Dre oversaw the project as a whole, and they did a fine job.

On a general scan of the songs, you can definitely hear that the tape has a dark sound — even for the Game. Highlights include the unofficial Miami Heat anthem, titled "MIA (3 Heats)," made as an ode to the newly crowned three kings (Dwyane Wade, LeBron James, and Chris Bosh).

Another highlight — "Street Riders," featuring Nas and Akon — may very well be the best song on the mixtape. Following those two tracks are various guest appearances from T.I., Shawty Lo, Waka Flocka Flame, Snoop Dogg, and Busta Rhymes. Even Dre (the producer) makes his return to the mike with a verse on "Cold Blood."

Cool & Dre have openly expressed they'd like to use this tape as a precursor to upcoming collaborations with the Game. And you can most definitely expect Cool & Dre to make a bigger stamp on the industry as soon as Lil Wayne finishes his prison stint. But in the meantime, Brake Lights will most definitely hold you down.
