Pocky, Nori, Walky Walky

Japan is a tiny island, but it’s filled to the brim with some of the world’s most interesting culture, including curious cuisine, which to most Americans’ palates is more intriguing than appetizing. You won’t be seeing McSushi at our drive-thrus anytime soon (thank God). But rest easy, fatty. Thanks to well-stocked Asian markets, there are still plenty of Japanese junk foods to enjoy. That is, if you can figure out what’s tasty based on ambiguous product names such as Pocky and Walky Walky.

This Sunday at 2 p.m., Tate’s Comics comes to your culinary rescue with its free semiannual event Japanese Snack Tasting. For two hours, you’ll be able to challenge your edible insecurities while sampling a variety of Rising Sun goodies under the tutelage of international snacks aficionados. Take heed, though, nori (seaweed) candy might become your new crack and Tate your dealer.
Sun., Aug. 1, 2 p.m., 2010
