French Connection

Patricia Franchini got what any American girl would want while studying abroad in Paris: an androgynous but sexy haircut and impregnated by a morally bankrupt Frenchman. She's the protagonist of Jean-Luc Godard's 1960 film, Breathless, the pièce de résistance of French New Wave cinema, beloved for its film references, jump cuts, and extended pillow-talk scene covering literature, death, and love. Although the Miami Beach Cinematheque is officially closed for the summer as it transitions from Española Way to Miami Beach City Hall, founder Dana Keith jumped at the chance to screen the 50th-anniversary restoration of the film classic. “Breathless is one of the most iconic films of all time and represents a major change in film history and aesthetics. I'm happy to screen it at this time of change for MBC. Nostalgia and the future all rolled into one. It's kind of like what's going on for us right now.” Breathless will screen Friday through Sunday in the ballroom of the Raleigh Hotel.
Fri., July 23, 8 p.m., 2010
