If you believe tribal legend, Miccosukee Indians fell from the celestial skies into a Florida lake and had to swim ashore to build their village. In 1992, those same skies released the wrath of Hurricane Andrew, downing their Australian pines and thatched-roofed huts. The tribe members looked for help, but they also wanted to give something back. They created the Miccosukee Freedom Festival, a day of live music and family activities sprinkled with Native American culture.

At this Saturday’s Freedom Fest, you can zoom through a river of grass via airboat (sorry, wildlife), watch a grown man dominate a gator in a bestial S&M demo, and admire technicolor patchwork at a Miccosukee fashion show. Or if you’re like the U.S. government and want to ignore all native culture, use the day as an excuse to meet Dolphins fullback Lousaka Polite, cornerback Vontae Davis, and cheerleaders, as well as Heat dancers and mascot Burnie. KC & the Sunshine Band and El Gran Combo will perform.
