Before you write an article like this, you should maybe think about all the crime that flares up all over Miami during this weekend. Hip Hop culture promotes violence, and people associated with the hip hop culture are more then likely to smoke weed, rape, do violent crimes, be associated with gangs, and or pretty much anything that's mentioned in literally every single rap. Luke I understand ur frustration and i agree with you over the Police show of force and unfair pricing,but unfortunatelly the reality is some of this crowd pees all over the place,steals from the stores and creates an agressive,chip on the shoulder presence.
If you can come up with a solutio we would all be happy for it,unfortunatelly the normal businesses in the city are destroyed for this weekend are regulars are afraid to go out...that is the perceived reality..althought the crime is realatively minor.
The only people who make money on Urban weekend is the very scalpers you mention...the $200 scooter rentals or illlegal t shirt vendors....why dont you organize a boycott of these business instead of just complaining about it?

The businesses may be busy, but ask any waiter, valet, bartender or manager and they will tell you that the clientele is the worst we get any time of the year. ANYONE in the service business will tell you this without hesitation.
As for prices being jacked up... valet and parking prices are always higher during holidays, simply cause of scarcity of supply and opportunism. not racism. Servers will demand credit cards up front, since people walk off on tabs regularly. Its the experiences that the events promoted around this weekend from the recent years that dictate preparation and procedures.

The destruction left behind is what U leave out! I've have lived on this beach since the early 50's & no group of people would come here & do "eat & run" from restaurants, bbq in hotel elevators, the shooting in mango's & every year there's a shooting in 1 of the clubs. If anything the beach tries to protect them by keeping it out of the press, like they did with the shooting death of a black on black crime on 14th & ocean dr. inside a new French bistro. The beautiful beaches that U claim these so called tourist come to c, r trashed & littered with no end! Just like they do in Halover Marina. As far as the beach losing the money that these thugs bring down, bullcrap, they leave more damage than the 10 million they r hoped to leave here! The fact is that when they had the beach boycotted, the beach BOOMED & saw is best years. 88-94. Then the Royal Palm was practically giving to them right next door to the sucessful Delano, & they used it to sue others & scheme on the property till it went to foreclosure. People that eat in restaurants then run, r low lifes! Just walk into the police dept. during this hell weekend & c all the black girls reporting being assulted & robbed, ect. by their own crowd!

1. Miami Beach Business, especially the hospitality businesses, gouge everyone anytime there is a tourist event down here. Witness the ludicrous prices during every Super Bowl.
2. Art Basel and that other crap don't bring the number of tourists that Hip Hop weekend does, hence less gouging. Plus, those are more local events, that target people from the area, especially the local gay community. People don't come in droves from out of town for those like they do for hip hop weekend, and it's easier to work over a tourist than a local.
3. Miami Beach had such a problem with the crime that came with Hip Hop weekend several years ago that it instituted a "no tolerance" policy. Since then, it's much safer, now, but they've gone too far. Now, Hip Hop weekend is the only weekend of the year when you cannot play your music loudly.
4. The hotels make everyone pay jacked up prices for drinks, etc. this weekend. They don't just target blacks. I live here, I'm white, and if I want a drink or to get into the club, I have to deal with the same nonsense. No love for residents, here.
5. You'd be better served exploring the anecdotal reports of racism at the clubs. Blacks turned away at the door in higher numbers than others at certain clubs.

LOL, I'm no statistician, but I'd guess that "young, professional African-Americans from out of town" make up less than 10% of the attendees at black beach weekend. In fact, young, black professional's from IN-town wouldn't even be caught dead on the beach during Memorial Weekend (with the exception of those of us who go to laugh at the hood folks and the dudes who go looking for loose ass to smash). The REAL black beach crowd consists mostly of hood trash from varying areas in Miami, ghetto girls who are fast in the ass, and aspiring hip-hop artists peddling their wares up and down Washington Ave. Black Beach is no Essence Music Festival. Unlike black beach, Essence attracts high-class black professionals who know how to have a good time without degrading themselves (and you wonder why the police line the streets...if you look, act and represent yourself like trash don't be surprised when you get treated like trash). It seems Uncle Luke (who has NEVER been associated with high-class anything) has his information mixed up. While I will agree the the costs associated are outrageous, the event as a whole is ghetto as hell and we all know what happens when there's too much hood mess around...police, high costs and lack of freedom! For those considering black beach for next year, if you're in to walking around in public with a skimpy bikini on with your bullet wounds and stretch marks for all the world to see, have an affinity for cars that cost more than your home, or find yourself wearing hair weaves that look like a clown threw up, then Memorial Weekend on South Beach is for you!

Mr. Beach, nobody wants blacks in their neighborhood, schools, supermarkets, malls, sports teams, etc. for a reason, a very valid and important reason. This reason is the same reason so many cops are called in to a blackfest. FBI crime stats are not prejudice, are not biased, and are not racist. Blacks commit crimes at a rate that's utterly disgusting, really, it's almost unbelievable. Please keep in mind that when compiling stats the FBI places ALL crimes by Mexicans into the White group. This, too, is a fact. Imagine how low the white crime stats would be if Mexicans had their own demographic. One more thing, looks at the races compared to percentage of population. Whites are near 70% of population, so it could only be assumed they commit 70% of the crimes, right? Not nearly the case. Even worse, look at black stats at only 13% of population in numbers.
It's not melanin, it's culture. The black culture is one steeped in failure, FACT, and we deal with this fact every day.

I have lived here in South Beach for a few years now. I have to say that Memorial Weekend here is hell! I, like many other residents, don't even attempt to leave their homes because of the horrible traffic and lack of safety. Although I have to agree with some of the issues with local police, since I have seen the corruption first hand. I got news for you people, the MBPD do not discriminate, they equaly offend and harrass everyone (including residents).
Not one person that I know that lives and works here on the beach is happy with Memorial weekend. They don't make money and they don't feel safe. Everyday I am told of the horrible things that happened the night before at their jobs.. stealing, fighting, stabbings, shootings, harrassment, vandalisim. You name it, it happens.
What I want to know is if so many of the residents of Miami Beach are so obviously threatened and unhappy with the effects of this event, why hasn't something been done about it? Who do we need to speak to or petition to put an end to this? Seriously...

I think you fail to realize that it is not about African Americans. It is about a crowd that comes to the beach and trashes the city that hosts it. The fact that most visitors during this weekend are African American speaks not of intolerance, but of a culture that has voluntarily associated itself with the idea that Tony Montana deserves to be admired and imitated. If you look like a thug you deserve being stopped by the police, after all they are being payed with our tax money to keep streets safe.
Now, if you could please explain to me why is it that during the Whine and Food festival the city makes more money from a smaller crowd, and spends less money cleaning after them... would love to hear your answer, taking into consideration that a large portion of the visitors during that weekend are hispanic (also a minority, to which I belong)

I would like to point out brother that this is not about if or not this event is one of the referenced " all lily-white events that the city welcomes" It is not about lily whiteness at all.
The ethnic makeup of those charged with ensuring public safety and the overall demographic of the citizens of Miami- Dade.
If you look at the decision-makers and how this all works I would hope you would see that the "lily white" reference is inflammatory and represents not what is but is meant as a slight to Caucasians.
The facts are these- the" Po- Po" as you might refer to them in a tune is commanded by a lighter shade of brown with a surname not of European descent. Therefore, any decision made is not one of "Lily Whiteness" or not. It may be that as a community it is better to be safe than sorry.
The economics of the rise in price associated with business is not about black or white- it is all about the supply and demand and that color green that keeps the wheels of progress turning for all.
I'm confident that the leaders of the city do not wish to cage anyone. However, should history repeat and the overall isolated incident remains constant, you and the business owners will enjoy a mutually beneficial relationship now and into the future.
It's really going to come down to this- if every person in attendance checks their attitude at the door, if the criminals would take a couple of days off and have some fun then the necessity to police would be minimized. You may encourage those that wish to attend to police themselves?
Perhaps then, folks can turn this affair into a Rainbow with some more gold at the end to flash in the next video.

Starting next Memorial Weekend the professionals that come to the beach should take the party elsewhere. Say, Myrtle Beach for example. Hit Miami Beach where it hurts, in their pockets. If you are a single male walking alone after dark, you will be harassed by those thugs in uniform! The city is after gays and blacks, the 2 demographics they advertise toward, and is ready to get money from those anyway they can, including charging you with ridiculous ordinances. Their cars conveniently have no cameras to cover up their lies... Yet their website says welcome to the city of 25/7 and that you need an extra hour to have fun. Yet their beach is closed after midnight. WTF? Entrapment?
They are really homophobic and racist too. it's useless to complain, because all the complaints to the city will end up back in the police department, and then they will threaten you.

The memorial day weekend can get kinda wild, but police officers are only discriminating against single males... instead of making it safe for everyone.
I will never go back there, it's disgusting... so much hate and sadism, unbelievable. the things those officers told me was so violent and crazy... If you are white, stay home. If you are a drug dealer, drug user, prostitute or gang banger, then go. I made the mistake of going down there one time at night and the place was like the inside of a Miami-Dade county jail, except bigger. All the convicts (or future convicts) from around the country come to SoBe for this weekend. So go out, enjoy getting robbed or shot, and enjoy your weekend.

I work in film, and when we have had the misfortune of having clients staying at the beach during this week, they have been mugged, seen people taking shit in the street, one had fire alarm wake them every night, women were assaulted, men ahd prostitution offerings, and in a personal case, I had a camera stolen by 3 thugs that simply got into a hummer with giant wheels laughing... all of this was either inside a top hotel in south beach or outside of it.
Needless to say, those clients WILL NEVER return to Miami, they could not believe what they saw... so I am sorry but it IS a problem, whether you want to be blind to it or not, the weekend is disaster for all. If the people that came behaved it would be another story, but it is not a boon for hotels.

I appreciate so much the comment made by Mikal Tulloch. I am not a racist. I have lived with a black roommate for the last 5 years, and am married to a Hispanic man. I am also a business owner in Miami. This isn't a "black" issue, per se. We have tons of African-American customers who are wonderful to serve. Then you have the people who come on Memorial Day Weekend. Most people with any amount of class avoid South Beach like the plague on this weekend because the people who show up are too loud, too obnoxious, and too violent. Last year when we had a business on Ocean Drive, vacationers took over our terrace and our tables, ordered nothing, then told us to heat up their food that they'd bought somewhere else. And I dare you to say no...the previous year, with previous owners, they fire-bombed the place after an argument. These people (most, not all) go into your restaurant, where you work hard, order a bunch of stuff, eat half, then say they don't like it and don't want to pay. And if you argue they cause a scene and break your things. Does it make me racist that I'd rather they not come? I don't have a right to ensure the safety of myself and my business? If I was African-American I would be angry that I was lumped in with this group of trash. Don't come here with an attitude, trash people's places, then call them racists when they don't want you to come back.

While I agree with Uncle Luke on some of his observations in the way Miami Beach treats African Americans over the Memorial Day weekend, I also believe some of the blame for this has to be placed on the participants. While a lot of the hysteria surrounding 'black' weekend can be dismissed as just plain hype and overreacting, past behavior of the patrons has led to this. It is also not so much a case about racism, but more of about ignorance.
A majority of the crowd which descends on Miami Beach during this weekend, is typically the 'Jersey Shore' equivalent for black people. Sadly this is the only option that seems to be prevalently portrayed in the media and emulated by others. There is a large core of professional, well educated blacks who not only do not participate in this weekend, but are not seen or even solicited by the Miami Beach community. Maybe adding a Miami Beach Black Film festival or expanding the weekend celebration to include other elements of the black music scene would make a difference. Have you ever seen the crowd at a Maxwell, India Arie, Common, The Roots, Jill Scott, Erykah Badu, Lenny Kravitz, Prince or Janet Jackson concert, all African American artists, all with diversely different crowds. By adding this element it would not only widen the broad appeal of the holiday and increase the revenue for all of us in South Beach, but also educate others as to the enormous diversity of this market.
Finally, if African Americans want the respect of Miami Beach they have to start by respecting themselves, behave in a civilized manner and earn that respect. Riding around on the streets with music blaring, grabbing women on the sidewalk, harassing others, cussing, throwing trash on the floor, fighting, loud yelling/screaming, vandalizing property, walking out on bills and typical rowdy behavior does not win many friends or supporters in an already skeptical setting.
In the end there just has to be more tolerance for others as well as a sense of responsibility from all, the end result being an amazing positive experience for both residents and visitors.
Oh by the way, in case you are wondering I am a proud BLACK man who lives in Miami Beach.

I am shocked to see the comments of how blacks do not tip! I am black and go to SOBE all the time. Most restaurants include gratuity(tip) in your check if there is a party of 3 or more. Therefore,I will not give cash tip ifs its already in the bill. As for Memorial Weekend, the problems are usual out of towners who can not handle SOBE for some reason. If u go to SOBE on sundays it is full of blacks and latinos with no problems. However, MPD are nasty period!!!!!!

I have to agree with previous comments concerning the festivities that take placed during Memorial day weekend. I personally lived on the beach for 15 years and recount many instances where the blacks would trash the entire beach. I personally took memorial weekend as a time to vacate and vacation otherwise it would be dangerous out on the streets. I commend Miami-Dade county for taking the proper per-cautions and hope they will continue spending our taxes on maintaining the "niggers" as you put it behind bars.

It might sound like Luke is playing the race card, but we (NLPGimages) have been covering these events for the past few years and every event has crowd of people that cause trouble. This is the only event that I have seen the police protection bumped up to a level unheard of. The Wine and Food Festival has just as many people coming into the city drinking, rowdy, and drawing attention to themselves. We all know (blacks)are not wanted on the beach and it's not a secret to us that live and work on this beach every day. I still don't understand why this event has continued on the beach. Like you said Luke, "the city and the county need to take cues from places like New Orleans and Toronto". At the end of the day, its all about the Benjamins.

Why? because Blacks have a negative STEREOTYPE... criminals, ghetto, drugs, whatever else u think, and others feel "intimidated" by blacks.... and thats the first thing people think when they see a huge crowd of black people is that, uh oh something is probably gonna go down sooner or later. And thats true when theres ANY type of large crowd no matter what race you are. So of course, people are going to feel threatened and intimidated by the fact that Miami is going to turn into so-called "Little Africa", as someone described it, for the weekend.
I dont know what all happened down there last year, but I saw on the news everyone was smiling and saying they were down there to have a good time, not to start trouble. My friends event went, and they said the whooole beach had nothing but blacks (sadly...) and that it was not ghetto at all. Yes some of them ARE young professionals, I dont know about everyone else there but my friends have college degrees,work hard, and want to leave town for the weekend and go to miami. Miami is advertised to be a place for partying, and going to the beach so OF COURSE people are gonna go down there and party and go to the beach. When people drive from a different state, much less FLY there, AND pay for expensive hotels OF COUSRSE they're not going to have money left over to do anything else. I've been there in 2006, I was just ANNOYED by soo many cars trying to cross the causeway (we were stuck on there for 2 hours!!) and there being soo many people. Its just not a good weekend to go because of the NUMBER of people. So I didnt get to go out on south beach at night at all.
All I have to say if Miami can handle Calle Ocho, SUPERBOWL WEEKEND, And Spring Break, New Years, 4th of July.. but not Urban Weekend, something is really wrong.

Mr. Campbell is half right. The Miami Beach Police Department is corrupt and the officers are out of control. As the New Times has pointed out several times in excellent articles, Beach cops are basically overpaid, homophobic criminals.
Where Mr. Campbell is 100% wrong is in believing that Memorial Day Weekend is good for the local economy. Memorial Day Weekend is HORRIBLE for businesses and torturous for everyone in the service industry. Many businesses want to close their doors for the entire weekend, but stay open because the City threatens them.
The vast majority of working people on the Beach during this weekend are service oriented and live off their tips. Tips are few and far between on this weekend, yet the workload is much higher than normal. That's more work for less pay. And Mr. Campbell thinks this is good for the economy? He needs to step out of the strip club some night and attend an Economics 101 course at The U.
Can we come to a mutual agreement? If Mr. Campbell and the other attendees of Hip Hop Weekend leave Miami Beach and move to another city that welcomes them with open arms, we will take the overpaid homophobic criminals with badges dressed in riot gear off the streets for that weekend. Deal?
Mr. Campbell, I am someone who has lived in Miami Beach for 20 years and worked on South Beach in the service industry for the first 4 or 5 Hip Hop Weekends. I can assure you that the people who live and work in Miami Beach do not want you and your thugs here. Go away! Let us, the people who pay the cops their salaries, fix the broken police department. Deal?
FWIW, when I worked in the service industry for the first few Hip Hop Weekends, I worked a 12 hour shift and earned about $100-120 per day, or $10-12 per hour for busting my butt. Compare that to other busy weekends, like New Year's and the Fourth of July when I worked 12 hour shifts and averaged $500-700 for an average of $50 per hour.
CANCEL HIP HOP WEEKEND!!! TELL THE THUGS TO STAY HOME OR FIND ANOTHER CITY!!! FUBO!!!

As far as I recall year after year during this event there have always been shooting incidents, arrest for rowdy behavior, the vendors on the beach say they do not make money because most visitors do not purchase anything. This event is and always has been very different from the crowds at Art Basel or Art Deco weekends. The crowds at New Orleans have always been rowdy so if the event would like to move there I have no doubt they would be welcomed. It is unfortunate that a few bad people can spoil what could otherwise be a great venue for the City but the fact remains that the past history of this event is associated with negative incidents and high arrest ratios during the 3 day holiday year after year.

Maybe if people weren't hanging out of cars and fighting on corners the city wouldn't be scared of the destruction. The past two years there is some incident where either someone disappears or someone gets shot. I don't recall much of that happening during Art Basel or Wine and Food or even Super Bowl for that matter. Its not because there are blacks coming. Maybe I missed something KS, but last I checked there's nothing to "organize", this is just a situation of people all coming to Miami Beach for the long weekend, similar to a spring break. Maybe clubs have organized parties and such, but there isn't any large event going on similar to Art Basel where there's an actual show at the convention center. No one is against tourism or cultural events like those mentioned in New Orleans and Toronto, provided that those participating act like civilized adults. If you go in treating the cops like a bunch of "muthafuggas" as you say, why should they show you any more respect than you do to them? I've always believe that if you have nothing to hide, you have no reason to distrust the cops. Treat them with respect, act like the responsible adults that you claim to be, and there will be no problems. If you act like a second class citizen you deserve to be treated as one. It's up to the tourists who come to Miami Beach for Memorial Day to make this a good event.

You will understand Luke is just saying that if the weekend was more organized the city wouldn't have all of the problems you guys are mentioning. I'm on the beach every weekend, including Memorial Day Weekend I have been to the Essence Music Festival and organization does make a difference. But the cops on Miami Beach are nasty muthafuggas that brutalize minorities. I don't care what color you are no one wants to be harrased, or be put in jail. They don't want "BLACK" people there because other tourist avoid the area. It's the same reason why tourist avoid places duing spring break time. They have tried for years and we aren't going anywehre. If the event was organized it would have the potential to be very classy and profitable, provided that the muthafuggas stop treating blacks like second class citizens by closing their stores, restaurants and bridges to prevent access to the beach. And the police wouldn't need to be out in force if people would behave. EVERY year there are hundreds of arrests due to fights, shootings, robberies, you name it. The Miami Beach attiude is not about color, its about behaviour. I live in Miami and have been at the beach during Memorial Day Weekend, I'm glad the cops are out in full force that way everyone is safe.
You should feel that way too since most crime involving African Americans is between African Americans. I believe African Americans also have a right to feel safe and enjoy Memorial Day Weekend without the risk of being assaulted by some drunk jerk be it a white or black one.

First of all, when did Memorial Day Weekend become "Hip Hop Weekend" and why is everyone pointing fingers at African Americans/Blacks? Crimes occur when there are millions of people in one place PERIOD regardless of their race/ethnicity. This weekend include everyone not just blacks, but of course we;re easier to point out! Don't think for once that this particular "crowd" does not include law enforcement who creates just as much noise as the thugs (i.e older model chevy caprices w/large wheels and rims, stereo systems that will shake your whole neighborhood). I can't stand blacks that jump on the bandwagon and denounce their own race of people and call them "GHETTO." Whites at tailgate parties cause just as much of a commotion as the blacks during memorial weekend but because of their race the "law" and/or "city" doesn't seem them as a threat! If darker skin, gold teeth, loud music and customized cars = trouble, why aren't only those people locked up in prison. People get caught up in the stereotypes. As for business owners and employees who are speaking up, whether you get paid with 5 credit cards and $15 or not, you got paid. Locals hardly ever frequent your establishments. If you are unhappy with damages, hold their credit card information and charge them like the larger chains. Last time I checked, millionaire celebrities trash rooms all the time...but it's okay? Mr Campbell can try to spin it any way he wants, the truth of the matter is the police are only reacting to the criminal activity that takes place during this particular weekend.Hopefully reasonable people who read his article will not be fooled by all his bull. HE would have you believe that hard working police officers of all races colors and creeds her in south florida are kissing their wives mothers and children and licking their lips as they contemplate being abused,disrespected spat uponcalled racist thugs and in some cases being beaten and even shot at. You do the community a great disservice by painting our professional police officers as heavy handed racists. At the end of the day they just want to go home to their familys in one piece. If you come down here and show respect for the city of Miami and its permanent residents then have fun but don't think you can come down and destroy our city with your disregard for the law. I personally don't want to see you here because you ruin what could be a good weekend for myself and those of us that live here to celebrate a holiday weekend on our beach. In fact just take your party and go elsewhere. I won't welcome you.

What??? Really??? Hip-Hop Weekend brings money to South Beach and Miami?????? I can not believe you actually believe that! I work at a hotel on South Beach as a night auditor and I can tell you that these african-americans that come here for Memorial weekend do NOT have a dime extra to spend. Two people rent a room but all 9 of their boys,and or cousins stay in the room, too. You can see them in the liq.store 5 of them fighting about how much each one will have to chip in to by ONE bottle of Grey Goose. Then they come back to the hotel and run up and down the stairs getting drunk and sitting on the sidewalks and harrassing EVERYONE that passes by. Our rooms are trashed and we loose so much money on lost keys etc...,,,they also LOVE to just leave without checking out properly,(to avoid all the damage charges)and when they do check out they want to pay a $350.00 charge with 5 different check cards and $15.00 in cash. I haven't even begun to mention the FIGHTS good Lord!!!!! Everyone is fighting men and women,,over stupid things like WHAT ARE YOU LOOKING AT. I am NOT looking forward to this holiday at all because of all the Riff Raff that comes to Miami.IT DOES NOT MATTER WHAT SKIN COLOR YOU HAVE it depends on how you act as a person and Im sorry but Memorial Weekend brings out the worst of the african american people here in Miami. Even our president would be very UNHAPPY with the actions of these americans.

i feel the same way i lived in miami dam there all my life.near the beach and all they ever did was harrass black people like we aint shit.and its time to put a stop to it we can never enjoy our self. like the whites do. um tried of it thats way i dont go out no more cause they treat black like animals we have rights to......

You got to be kidding!I always love Luke's columns BUT I have to disagree with this one. The only places that really make money off of Memorial Weekend are bars, liquor stores and clubs! (Like they don't make a shit load of money now.) Restaurants get hit hard. Ya hotels may charge a lot but you have 5-7 people staying in 1 room. Locals hate coming to the beach on that weekend. The few tourist SoBe does have get turned off by it and head North or don't come back the following year. To much craziness. It doesn't feel good to walk down ocean drive and have people grabbing your ass and harassing you! People get arrested for a reason. Their should be more cops. You want to talk about all the money spent on cops, how about all the money spent on cleaning up after all the flyers all over the streets. City of Miami Beach is a disaster during and after Memorial weekend. And trust me when I say the clientele that come to SoBe for Memorial weekend, I highly doubt their are a lot of professionals. I'm sure a lot of people wouldn't mind having another city roll out the welcome mat. And from my understanding.....other cities have pretty much kicked out this crowd as well. Call it racist if you want its just too damn GHETTO!!!!!!

CHRISTPHER LAO,what are you kidding me ? Black people dont shop at Whole Foods, they shop(lift) at whole foods.In case you havent noticed ..(while working there), there is no Popeyes counter there.Please correct your posting.Memorial Day weekend on SOBE is nothing but dirtbags.
