How George Alan Rekers and his rent boy got busted by New Times

The young man sitting on a baggage cart at a Miami International Airport arrivals terminal seems worried. Lifting luggage is part of his job description, but his travel companion — a minister — and the bags are still at customs, randomly selected for a special security procedure.

The two guys standing nearby make the young man even more uneasy. One of them holds a hot-pink digital camera, and both are trying hard not to look his way. They keep stealing glances, which the young man tries to ignore.

He has no idea the two guys have spent the past week studying screen captures of his emails — including the itinerary of his trip with the minister — sent by a friend he once entrusted with his passwords. In fact, the young man doesn't really know the man with whom he has spent the past two weeks.

Eventually, the minister makes it out of customs with his baggage cart. The 61-year-old with combed-over hair and a bushy mustache joins his young travel companion. As they wait for an elevator, there is a click and a flash, and the guys with the pink camera disappear.

In less than a week, that picture will circulate the globe, and George Alan Rekers and his travel companion, Jo-vanni Roman, will become household names. Had it been anybody else returning from a two-week European vacation with a gay male escort, the affair probably would have stayed in the family.

But Rekers — who is divorced with six grown children, one of them adopted — is a leading activist in the nation's anti-gay movement and a cofounder with James Dobson, America's best-known homophobe, of the Family Research Council. The Baptist minister and prolific author is also a board member of the National Association for Research and Therapy of Homosexuality (NARTH), which champions a clinical "gay cure."

It doesn't take long for the story to unfold. On April 14, the day after returning home, Rekers receives a call in the middle of his workday. He sounds wary and chooses his words carefully when the caller identifies himself as a reporter for New Times.

"What, uh, what issue are you interested in?" Rekers asks.

The reporter, Brandon K. Thorp, reveals he knows the identity of Rekers's travel companion, Jo-vanni Roman. "Well," Thorp says, "I'm just curious why you were traveling with a 20-year-old male prostitute with long blond hair, a swimmer's build, and an uncircumcised penis."

Rekers stammers. "Oh — I just found out about that while I was on the trip. He was, he was, um, advertising himself as a travel companion, and I cannot lift luggage."

"Where did you find out about his services as a travel companion? Where were they being advertised?"

"I did a Google search for 'travel companion,' and he came up on that. I contacted him."

"Oh, I see," Thorp says. "It wasn't on Rentboy.com?"

Long silence. Rekers's voice becomes thin at the mention of the pornographic gay escort site. "I don't know if it was or not."

It would be New Times' first and last conversation with Rekers. As soon as he hangs up, he calls Roman. The two, Roman would later admit, agree to a bowdlerized story to hide the fact that the young man's contract with Rekers called for more than hauling the minister's luggage on their trip to England and Spain.

"We both decided to [cut] the whole idea of the masseur out of the script," Roman would tell New Times. "If we cut it out, we don't have to worry about it, and we can keep it pretty legit."

Contacted by New Times reporter Penn Bullock the next day, the 20-year-old escort is surprisingly warm. He agrees to an on-the-record interview at his house the morning of Saturday, April 17 — provided his name is stricken from any story that might result.

Roman opens the front door of his West Kendall townhome and shows the reporters into a small, tidy home, whose most ostentatious feature is an Alienware laptop glowing psychedelically beyond an open bedroom door.

The escort's tall, swarthy soon-to-be ex-boyfriend sits on the couch in front of the TV set. When he sees the reporters, he darts into a bedroom like a startled fish and doesn't reappear.

During the two-hour interview, Roman readily admits he met Rekers at Rentboy.com but insists there was no sex, sensuality, or come-ons during their vacation.

"We went to a lot of parks, restaurants. I mean, we were just talking about everything... And I was basically just leading him around, being like a tour guide," Roman says. "If [Rekers] was looking for someone sex-wise, there were so many other guys that were showing so much more" on Rentboy.com's profile pages, he says.

When Bullock asks Roman if he has recently edited his profile, his voice climbs a half-octave. "I kinda got freaked about the whole picture thing," he says, admitting he has deleted references to his "tight ass" and "8-inch cock."

The rest happens fast. "The Last Temptation of George Alan Rekers" hits miaminewtimes.com Tuesday, May 4, around noon. PZ Myer's popular science blog, Pharyngula, is the first to link, followed by Joe.My.God. and Queerty. Then the Advocate links to the story, and then Dan Savage, the Daily Beast, the Daily Koz, Salon, Slate — too many to count.

George Rekers is typical of a type, a repressed homosexual with right wing religious convictions, who can only get near to the object of his desire by assuming a 'credential', in this case the unqualified psychologist with a Jesus complex. By offering bogus 'cures' supported by scientifically unproven theory's he can move into the heart of enemy territory rather like a Trojan horse. Very dangerous, because they are unstable, nearly all of them ride for a fall, but, rather like the serial killer with whom they share certain similarities, they sincerely believe they can get away with their double life for as long as they like. There is a kind of arrogance to it. I don't care what happens to Rekers, he's a coward and a fool, but I do care for the people he has damaged as he made his odious way through life with his cronies from the religious community.

I am glad this Rekers got caught - he dug his own grave and now is throwing soil on himself. Its funny how all these "holier than thou" "anti-gay everything" guys always get caught with male prostitutes or "escorts" - if I were an escort I will expose all of them!!!!

  • mark 05/14/2010 8:30:00 PM

I am disgusted that some people are trying to blame the reporters for this man's wrongdoing, what...are you people high on crack? Rekers is a terrible man but if he just wants to have "fun" like this just go to a bathhouse where it can be anonymous and no one gets hurt publicly that are close to you. What a dumb ass Rekers is. And people leave these good reporters alone!

  • Carpool Kathleen 05/14/2010 2:04:00 AM

Journalists do not have to reveal their sources; the paper has already revealed more than its obliged to as to how it was tipped off. If any "more seasoned journalists" are in a tither about how it all came down, they can write their own expose about it. This is a major story and I'm so glad it came out. I especially salute Roman for participating in the story further, which he did not have to do. He's made a meaningful contribution to society by going on the record, and it's won him admiration and appreciation from others.

  • Jerry 05/13/2010 8:08:00 PM

Thanks for your HARD work and LONG hours to UNCOVER what Dr. Rekers was really up to. Your reporters worked their BUTTS off to BLOW the facts out. I hope MR. Rekers realizes his IMPUTE contributed to this scandal and in the future he should learn not to COME to this type of deception.

  • RunwayAnimal 05/13/2010 8:23:00 AM

Roman, You're a Hero in my book. Hang in there, you did the right thing to let a 3rd person know of where you were, it's safety just in case the "john" does something bad. Your cooperation with the Media to uncover Rekers is greatly admired by most GLBT people. Rekers is a monster. Hey Rekers, if you read these comments... Bring on your baseless "defamation" lawsuit... You'll be on the Witness Stand, under Oath and have to weather the Cross Examination of a Defense Attorney. It won't be nice. How many more Lies will you tell then? It's already in Prior Court Decesions, that your Testamony given there was "Suspect." I hope you have to give the $120K back to FL and it's Citizens!

  • eeeeeeeeee 05/13/2010 1:44:00 AM

I WAS JUST IN MIAMI BEACH AND ALL I GOT WAS A FREAKIN BELL HOP. HEY, SON. COME HERE: OH, AND CARRY MY BAGS, BEND OVER, AND I'LL DRIVE YA TO KET WEST

  • BJ 05/13/2010 1:39:00 AM

Looks like Rekers has been speaking to Christianity Today... "I confessed to the Lord and to my family that I was unwise and wrong to hire this travel assistant after knowing him only one month before the trip and not knowing whether he was more than a person raised in a Christian home," Rekers said. "I also confessed to the Lord and to my family the sin of thereby putting myself into a vulnerable situation where I tragically became subject to false allegations." Rekers said that he regrets "unanticipated harm" for his "unwise decision," and briefly mentioned part of the trip. "One thing for which I am grateful is that my travel assistant openly shared his spiritual doubts with me during the trip and he did let me share the gospel of Jesus Christ with him with many Scriptures in three extended conversations." Rekers said he is being advised by a team of three Christian counselors. "And I have committed myself to ongoing meetings with an experienced pastor and counselor from my church, so I can more fully understand my weaknesses and prevent this kind of unwise decision-making in the future." from http://www.christianitytoday.com/ct/2010/mayweb-only/29-32.0.html

Congratulations to the two reporters, Thorp & Bullock for uncovering & exposing this Holy Hypocrite to the masses. Some of the comments appearing here are interested in fairness to the subject in uncovering these events. Rekers has never exhibited fairness in all of his hypocritical doctrine. More exposes are needed on the all-out war promoted on the gay community by these self loathing demons. Again, excellent work reporters.

  • Editor 05/12/2010 8:41:00 PM

Editor's note: New Times reporters Brandon K. Thorp and Penn Bullock were provided copies of emails between George Rekers and Jovanni Roman by an authorized user of Roman's facebook account. One of the emails provided the itinerary for their trip to Europe. Thorp and Bullock used the information to go to the airport for the scheduled arrival of the flight and snap pictures of Rekers and Roman arriving together. They then confirmed the story by interviewing the two subjects. The stories posted by New Times were carefully reviewed by editors and legal staff. If there are any further questions, do not hesitate to write a letter to the editor.

Something here does not sound right. I still do not understand clearly how you got the info, how and why you accessed the account, how you knew who the man was, where to find him, etc. This has only muddled things up, and the impression that I am getting, is that the way this came down is not the way you guys are describing it. It reeks of very little professionalism, respect for sources, lack of procedure, legal ramifications and an erosion of credibility - even more - of the profession. This story should have been handled by veteran reporters at Miami New Times, not young neophytes with too much ambition. Other blogs are pointing out that there seems to have been some collusion with the escort, and I am starting to believe so. There is a cloud hanging over this story, regardless of the positive outcome of exposing a hypocrite such as Rekers. Whatever the case, the truth will come out in the end. It always does.

  • James 05/12/2010 9:42:00 AM

What you have done is just another example of the dirty trick of those unprofessional journalists like those from trashy National Enquirer. If you are hoping to be praised or getting a Pulitzer prize, the way you did it will only sack your career and I hope it will. Plus it's totally violated the privacy and again I hope someone will find the way to sue you and the Miami New Times. How could you sacrifice someone's life for your ambition? If something bad will happen to both of your life and family in the future, don't be surprised because Karma is a bitch...

  • Skeptic 05/12/2010 7:20:00 AM

A defamation suit will be just a waste of money for George Alan Rekers. Truth is a defense to defamation. That's why he says he's in the process of retaining an attorney, because whomever he talked to would have already told him that. Isn't it an irony that at age 61 he has this scandal wide open, to his family and friends. He deserves it.

  • Simon 05/12/2010 5:41:00 AM

Keep up the heat on Rekers. He is counting on a "short attention span" from the media. DO NOT let this low life scum hide under a rock. Shine the light BRIGHTLY and CONSISTANTLY - Do NOT let Rekers or Bill Mccollum let this fade away. They have ruined countless lives with their lies and hate.

  • L Lee 05/12/2010 4:36:00 AM

The reporter writes: "Associated with one another?" Roman interjects. Where Roman jumped in to finish George's sentence: "...neither of us would have —" This reinforces my intuition that something much more happened and is not being told. Why did Roman jump in and not allow George to finish? Why did the reported not ask this question? Something has been missing in what Roman recounts... and something is missing about these stories. For a gay affair something smells fishy here ;-)

  • Laurie 05/12/2010 3:58:00 AM

Who was monitoring Roman's emails and why? The real story is yet to be told--how did New times get onto this story in the first place. The nervous guys at the airport with the pink digital camera do not appear to be reporters. Who are they? The story of how Rekers's hypocrisy was exposed is still to be exposed.

  • mark 05/12/2010 12:35:00 AM

George Alan Rekers is a egotistical, hypocrytical, lying, biggot who is in the closet about liking young boys to play with. He has disgraced his family and everyone that knows him. He should probably just commit suicide and then we can all just forget about the asshole. The young boy was just trying to make a living, good for him, but with an ugly fat disgusting minister, which most of them are anyway. Politics as usual here. Wonder if the rest of the assholes in the political arena will continue to pay him for his ridiculous words.

  • themarsist 05/12/2010 12:30:00 AM

Great work guys! Unfortunately, it looks like bi-curious George would rather fight this than admit the obvious. His website just announced his resignation from NARTH so he can "fight the false media reports that have been made against me." I wonder how any of the conservative groups that George Rekers belong to would respond to the following question if I asked it... (ahem)... "I just spent 10 days in Europe with an uncircumcised male prostitute that I got from rentboy.com massaging my penis and anus the entire trip...do you think I'm gay?"

  • Christy 05/12/2010 12:17:00 AM

may I add, I'm glad Rekers has been exposed for his hypocrisy. I just hope it was done in an upfront way.

  • Christy 05/12/2010 12:15:00 AM

So the tip for the photo at the airport came from "screen captures of (the escort's) emails — including the itinerary of his trip with the minister — sent by a friend he once entrusted with his passwords?" This sounds like a massive invasion of privacy (even if you eventually got cooperation from the escort), and reminds me of the Cincinnati Enquirer/Chiquita debacle in which a reporter got access to the password for a private voicemail box at the company and reported on what he heard. That got the reporter canned, the paper sued, and tarnished the profession of journalism. Or maybe I'm missing something here?

  • a. mcewen 05/11/2010 10:35:00 PM

You forgot the Huffington Post. Good work guys but I'm curious. Who informed you of Rekers and "Lucien" in the first place?

  • GD 05/11/2010 10:12:00 PM

It's so nice when a nice young man, one down on his luck, can hopefully lift himself up with some interviews and business exposure as, simultaneously, a loathesome political-whore and hyprocrit spectacularly crashes to Earth. Thanks, George. You're going a long way to rectifying all the guilt and prejudice that you've heaped on others.
