Diogo Brown

The last three Tuesdays of May see Jazid hosting performers of the type of music that gave the venue its name. Local promoter KCC Productions has brought back jazz to Washington Avenue with a series of weekly shows that, let's hope, will provide a regular gig for local fans and acts. It kicks off this Tuesday with a performance by bassist and songwriter Diogo Brown, originally from Rio de Janeiro but now based in Fort Lauderdale.

The 29-year-old proudly claims Fort Lauderdale's last great jazz bassist, the late Jaco Pastorius, as an influence, but has liberally applied a more global influence. While his compositions bear the rhythms of his homeland, there are also measured doses of electronic and soul influences. Rather than letting the bass take a rhythmic back seat, Brown delivers nimble-fingered licks and funky slaps that often steal the melodic show.
