Sure, eight Tony Awards might impress some people. But for those of us who don’t speak “jazz hands,” music composer Duncan Sheik is reason enough to catch the musical Spring Awakening. Formerly known as a one-hit wonder (“Barely Breathing,” Google it), Sheik is the man behind the riveting music and lyrics that charge the pop-rock adaptation of Frank Wedekind’s controversial 1891 play of teen self-discovery. Although set in the 19th Century, the performance is modernized with a full rock band and forward-thinking characters that will make you want to fist-pump, cry, and kick your neighbor’s seat.

Running through May 16, the traveling Broadway show makes its debut at the Adrienne Arsht Center this Tuesday. But before you consider inviting your High School Musical-loving niece, take heed: Spring Awakening is light on the Zac Efron and heavy on the sex, suicide, and rock ’n’ roll.
