Carlos B. Alonso 08/11/2010 10:52:00 AM
Mr. Campbell,
The Dominicans that you are speaking of are as black as the blacks born in the US. Unfortunately, Tori Hunter is only an example of the great ignornce that exists about racial issues in our country.
Not only is a black person from any country black, but also a white one. It is time to dismiss stupid labels such as Hispanic as if was a race.
To the point who cares where these player are born. If anyone does, then they are bias and ignorant. I would take Ichiro in right field over anyone else. Don't care where if from!

I do have to agree that I dont associate baseball with black people, i also have the ignorant belief that we are good at basketball and football, but its b.c of society and the stereotypes we limit ourselves to our capabilities and opportunities, i was shocked to see a black man on the us swimming team, why is that? it like we r segregating ourselves, i dont only blame the owners of these teams i blame ourselves b/c we dont like to go out of the boc, im rambling buts it b/c u sparked some interest keep these articles coming im loving them

Edward 05/06/2010 11:27:00 AM
It is sad that this article is published, and even sadder that it is written by an African-American. Dominicans are black. Haitians are black. The majority of Brazilians are black. Get the hint? When the slave ships crossed the Atlantic, they stopped in many ports. In fact, the British brought far fewer to the USA than the Spainards took to the Caribbean or the Portuguese took to Brazil. This article screams of ignorance, and feeds the white, far-right strategy to divide and conquer us. We are all black. We are all beautiful. I am an African-American, and I am happy to see brown/black people achieve - regardless of which ship they came on, and what language they were taught by their former owners!
-
Chris 04/30/2010 12:49:00 AM
This is the stupidest thing i've ever read, and Luke is an idiot for saying this..
First off, its not the fault of baseball that more dominicans are in the league then black people.. Thats like saying its NFL's/NBA's fault there are more blacks then whites..
Guaranteed, that if Cuba was free, there would be an equal amount of cubans both black and white (Same as Puerto Rican baseball players) in the big leagues, because everyone who knows anything about baseball knows the talents that cuba possesses in baseball..
MLB has special programs I think their called RBI Program which is Reviving Baseball in Inner Cities.. They are trying to sponsor leagues and materials etc..
Now, lets put things in perspective, soccer is the most popular sport in the world, why? Because its the easiest to participate in, you only need a ball.. Basketball is accessible to young blacks in inner cities because.. You only need a ball.. Baseball -> 400-500 for a good glove, need more than one if u play infield, outfield, 1st base, catcher.. 500 a normal bat not even good.. Uniforms are expensive as hell as well.. Thats a good 800-1,100 start up cost for your kid..
Now back to dominicans, their only way out is baseball, seriously, just like many say inner city blacks only way out is rapping, football, basketball or whatever... These people live and breathe baseball since they are born and play with even cardboard gloves and a tree stump as a bat..
There have been great black players as well as dominican/puerto rican etc. its just those countries generally dominant because the level of talent is greater.. Look at Ryan Howard an American Black man just signed a 25 million dollar a year contract 2 days ago..
And lastly, Blacks generally sway towards football and basketball more than baseball lets be honest.. And if you live in Dade County you know this, the leagues and best schools are dominated by Cubans, Puerto Ricans, and Dominicans.. I played high school and college baseball and seen it first hand..

Julio Pabón 04/26/2010 7:10:00 AM
I don't believe that there is a plan by MLB to eliminate African-American players & replace them with Black Dominican players. However, because of MLB's actions of globalizing the game, and teams looking to maximize profits the result is the same: Less African Americans & USA born Latinos as well. Who was the last Puerto Rican player to be drafted from the States? People need to step up and demand more from MLB. Tori Hunter was misquoted, but he was on target.
-
Felix Guzman 04/25/2010 5:08:00 PM
I can't believe this comment that major league baseball is replacing blacks with dominicans 'what' are they crazy don't they look at statistics they will be able to see that dominicans are better players than blacks and whites wouldn't you want the best baseball players for your team and is not the dominicans fault that they work so hard to make it maybe blacks should not be so racist after they been fighting it for so long how ironic is that.
-
Kathy 04/20/2010 9:30:00 PM
You sound so racist that is pathetic i cant believe that in 2010 this still exists. Especially living in the MIA which is full of hispanics and blacks its ridiculous. I bet most of the people who even listens to your music are Hispanic Americans, which i think should even boycott your music that's if anybodby still buys your music for such a stupid article you wrote. It always has to be something about a racist against black if a article doesn't have something about race you aint happy.
-
Guaro 04/20/2010 8:34:00 PM
Luke, it's unfortunate that your racist views are not only deeply wrong, but reflective of a common ignorance shared by many black Americans. When you understand the way the system really works, you realize that there really is no pervasive anti-black conspiracy in American society. Sure, there are plenty of both white and black racists out there, but the middle of the American bell curve is mostly people who judge others based on their individual merits and not their skin color (Obama, anyone?). The MLB works the same way. It is run based on supply and demand. The demand is for talented baseball players. The supply of these talented players is what it is. If there were more talented black American baseball players, there would be more black American players in the MLB (besides, many black American athletes prefer to go into other sports, like basketball and football). It is not, as you say, because Dominican players get paid less (ironic you should even mention that considering the Florida Marlins' highest paid position player is a Dominican... is it a coincidence that he's also the Marlins' most talented player? Of course not! It's about supply and demand, not nationality). Besides, these Dominican players' agents work for players of other nationalities, too. The agents negotiate their clients' contracts based on the athlete's production, not nationality. Just like many racist white Americans need to realize that people shouldn't be judged by the color of their skin, many racist black Americans need to realize that there is not some secret conspiracy afoot to keep them down. If both those realizations happen, America will take a big step toward solving its race problem.
-
Jose 04/20/2010 7:34:00 PM
I don't need to get into facts when ignorance is an issue. Luke, instead of using your time wisely, you write your insecurities and frustrations on paper. Someone with such power, to write their own thoughts, and have the society's attention, should devote their time to deliver a more powerful message. Especially, if you have a burden for the black youth. There's a greater need Luke. If you search deep in your soul and humble yourself, you will recognize it. Take care, God bless.
-
Lady Goo 04/20/2010 6:57:00 PM
Good morning, Luke! First of all, the initiative for the Marlins or Baseball sport scouts to recognize little league teams in Miami warrants some professional exposure and marketing strategies in order to get the support you say they don't have. Why do you assume that, in this era of globalization, America is limited to African American players, being paid much more than they're actually worth, is a given? The name of the game is to "win...!" If that takes importing Africans from other slave posts, i.e., Dominica, then so be it! You don't consider the dark skinned Dominicans of African descent? Don't be ridiculous, Luke! The Island of Hispanola is one of many slave posts in the Caribbean. France conquered Haiti, Spain conquered Dominica. The children in America are exposed to the things you said these other 'former slaves' don't have... scholarships, decent housing during training... but they train harder and longer, all while the American kids are living off 'perks' as babysitters, i.e., iPods, computers, cell phones, texting, sexting, cable tv, decent housing... Some of the kids in these 'disenfranchised' countries play the game with sticks and rocks with all their hearts. Is it any wonder, when they get older, they're some of the very best in the league? According to the currency exchange, the low pay the Dominicans receive is sooo appreciated and more than they'd receive in their own country. You shouldn't be so "ole' man river", Luke. It's the 21st century for crying out loud! I don't hear you complaining about why Blacks don't own the Miami New Times, huh? Everything has a system. Baseball is no exception, nor does it have a monopoly on internationalism. It's beneath you, Luke, to insinuate the resources are not available for inner-city Black youth regarding promotion of baseball. You claim to have had a youth team? Then why didn't you invest some of the money you made 'rapping' into your little league team? The underprivileged of other nations are migrating here because they've heard how lazy American Blacks are, and they take advantage, proactively, of the so-called crumbs Blacks refuse to accept and work it baby! As they progress, American Blacks are robbin' n killin' each other or sittin' under a tree gettin' high! Have a nice day, 'ole' man river...'
-
James 04/20/2010 2:45:00 AM
uncleluke............you really missed the mark on this one. MLB actually has programs (RBI) for inter-city kids. The problem is that the kids are taught "to take it to the hoops" or football, baseball is available, the kids choose not to play.
Boo to you............!
-
Lee Kellom 04/20/2010 2:09:00 AM
Dear Mr. Luke,
I totally agree with you. I grew up in the fifties and sixties and we had a baseball field in every community, from Goulds to Westpalm. We had a place to go afther school wher we could play Ping Pong, throw Horse Shoes and play Baseball, CaulkBall for the little ones.
American leaders are investing in Prisons instead of our kids- you see the can get investors to invest in private prisons when they should be pushing for funds to help our kids. After all they are the true patriots of America.

smash44 04/19/2010 8:53:00 PM
This is all part of the Big Conspiracy to drive all WHITE athletes from the NBA and NFL,isn't it? Why no clamor over that disparity? Let's fac the truth. If you're not good enough to beat out someone of a different race, that's it. This is just purely ridiculous. Black racist PIGS.
-
David 04/19/2010 4:53:00 AM
You've got to be kidding me! Racism under every rock? Let me ask you a question, Luke. When you buy a product, do you pay as much as you can for the best quality, or as little as you can for that same quality? Let me postulate that baseball teams do what you would do...they want the best player (product) they can get for the least amount of money. This is often referred to as the free market. You do it, so do they. To insinuate the reason for this is racism is disingenuous, dangerous, and irresponsible. It's people like you that keep racial tensions high. Haven't you figured out yet that racism is a game the government likes us to play so we keep our eyes off the ball and our attentions away from the things that really matter. Is there racism i the world; there sure is. Is there much that can be doe about it that hasn't already been done...no. It is sad, but a fact of life and no amount of government regulation will make it go away. Fortunately, the vast majority of us don't care about race, color, creed, religion, etc. We judge each individual on their merit and integrity. Grow up and join the majority of the human race and stop race baiting.
-
malachi suttle 04/19/2010 3:59:00 AM
does it matter
im dominican and frankly Dominicans play baseball more than african americans do in the united states and the whole college thing is just a bonus to there skill if your mad because african americans are not playing mabye you need to see whose better... oh wait thats racist
and any how dominicans are black... black is a race and being hispanic is an ethnicity...
in fact all hispanics are black because thats the whole point of them being hispanic is that youre mixed
and frankly im dark and always get stereo typed into the african american category because the term african american is an ethnicity what if theres some one british or canadian americans that are black. Do they not count either?
and youre not even african because you dont come from africa... and also dominicans are darker than you so if african american dont go to the mlb because of there salary o well thats what happens in job interviews
i could go on a rant all day but you are selfish because their could be a white kid not getting the opportunity and honestly it might be true but the fact is that you're raciest
-
Jessica 04/19/2010 1:18:00 AM
I've read a handful of articles written by Luke, and I must say that he sure creates racism. I am Puerto Rican, and I love all people white, black, hispanic, and so on. Why does everything have to be a racial issue with you. If you care so much about getting more blacks in baseball, why aren't you out there creating leagues for black youth. What no time? You have so much time to bitch about other races making it that you can't even help create something that you want to see. That is just plain old IGNORANCE! Stop complaining and start creating the difference in which you wish to see. I use to be a fan of yours, until you started writing, and I saw just how ignorant and racist that you truly are. What a shame. By the way, people need to get off this whole BS about hispanics need to go back to their countries cause no one originated here except the Indians, and since I don't hear any of you claiming your tribe, u should just shut up and stop sounding ignorant.

Jean 04/18/2010 9:31:00 PM
And while we are talking about African Americans, it pisses me off every time I hear about slavery and the "WHITE" enslaving the "BLACK", get out a history book you ignorant morons, the stronger "BLACK" tribes enslaved the weaker "BLACK" tribes and sold them to the "WHITE" man. "BLACK" on "BLACK" violence has always thrived and will continue to thrive because of ignorance.
-
Rusty Shackleford 04/18/2010 7:28:00 PM
What's next Luke, is the NBA slowly phasing out African Americans in favor of freakishly tall Chinese players? Seriously, Uncle Luke, you sound like a jackass. What gave you this idea? Is there any proof? Can you explain to the New Times readers just how you discovered this was happening? Or were you just mad that they picked on Barry Bonds because he hit too many home runs? You are like the black Peggy Hill writing stupid musings in a free local newspaper that bums use to wipe their asses with in Broward county. Nobody cares what you think you reject of a writer. I tell you what, this sum a bich Uncle PUKE err Luke can suck it hard. I have to say, A-Rod's $1/4 BILLION contract is not the best example of a Latin American player replacing an African American player (is Jeter black?) for less money.
-
Jean 04/18/2010 7:14:00 PM
Just like Mexicans in agriculture, and Hispanics in construction, the Dominicans are offering superior service for inferior prices, but once they turn pro, they get pro salaries. Just like White Americans and Black Americans are unwilling to "work" at all of the labor extensive jobs, the Hispanics take them and do the willingly and happily. This is how its always been, Hispanics will keep taking over each industry because of better work habits and the willingness to work, they'll start at a lower pay but then they will get paid what they deserve.
-
scottie 04/18/2010 5:55:00 PM
Lukes comment are so crazy, lets face it black parents don't get their kids to play baseball.its football.basketballand track. And baseball is not even a thought.
-
Isaac 04/18/2010 11:03:00 AM
This is utter nonsense. If you can throw a 90+ mile an hour fast ball, steal a base, and hit the ball out of the park Major League Baseball doesn’t care if you come from Mars. They'll take the BEST athletes available. Get out of my face with this garbage.

luke im a fan of your music, but you making no fucking sense hommie, you should worry why black man are taking over the prison population not baseball.
-
David Bridges 04/17/2010 9:53:00 PM
I agree with Luke 100%. The decline in black Americans in MLB is more complicated than simply black American athletes choosing to play football and basketball over baseball.
-
Chris 04/17/2010 9:09:00 PM
Business always seeks cheaper and better products, even if they have to move abroad for them. Sports are nothing more than businesses. Why should they invest in the home-grown American ball player -- regardless race -- when people from around the world (Dominican, Cuban, Korean, Japanese) don't require the expensive farm system, don't require lots of development, and are better players than our home grown stars. Capitalism at its finest; deal with it.

Rafael A 04/17/2010 8:13:00 PM
First of all I am Dominican American born in Dade county I agree with uncle luke Professinal Baseball need to invest more money and time on Youth baseball leauge in this country. My opinion is that Baseball is not played enoughf in the innercity like it was in the 40,50 and early sixty baseball is not selfish enoughf sport for american youth to get into baseball in the D R is what they live and breath plus major league baseball Find it cheaper to invest in talent that they Consider less problem-matic they can have a fourteen year old play and live baseball around the clock were in this country there are recruiting laws they can not violate. It is sad. Because I enjoy baseball and would like to see more diversity.
-
04/17/2010 7:26:00 PM
Are you seriously playing the race card about baseball? All we are ever shown on TV and such is that black males like basketball and not baseball. Perhaps you should whine about the white players getting pushed out due to so-called cheap labor from outside the USA, or is it really your opinion that race is all it is about? If it is only about race, you are so wrong, I cannot believe I just spent time reading your blog and then replying.
Just out of curiosity, are you a democrat? The party that brought us segregation, the KKK, and other such things?
-
Dom 04/17/2010 10:26:00 AM
The only difference between an African-American and a black Dominican is language. It's insulting to label black Dominicans of African descent as "imposters". The fact is young American athletes would rather play Football and Basketball than Baseball. What is left to play baseball is not the top athlete available. People from Latin America rank Soccer and Baseball first. So higher quality players play these sports.
How many times did "Uncle Luke" appear in the dugout of a UM baseball game? I guess it's not as attractive as appearing on the side line of a UM football game. Kids make the same decisions. Can't cry about it later.
-
Nick 04/17/2010 3:08:00 AM
Luke sure stirred the pot here. I think that was the point really. I have a conspiracy theory too; the NBA has been strategically replacing white players with black ones. Please, its because we werent made for the game. Could it be that Latino players are simply better at something? African-Americans rule the NBA, NFL, and you still have Tiger in the PGA. If you want to get pissed about lack of black involvement in pro sports, why not attack the NHL or better yet NASCAR. I think we should use our resources to promote stock car racing in the inner-cities of the US.
-
Bell 04/17/2010 12:58:00 AM
You are speaking the truth,Luke's.I been saying it for years they trying to delete black players out the game of baseball. We have many good black youth playing baseball well as football and basketball.I am pride you spoke it to the public to see the 20 and 60 are still here, just using it difference than back in those years it was used openly.Keep speaking the truth.God said what done in darkness he will bring to light.
-
Alex 04/16/2010 8:30:00 PM
Uncle Luck, are you freaking kidding me??? I find it very amusing when things don't go a certain way, the easiest thing for people to do is to pull out the race card. This is not a "pick on the black man" situation, this is a "Hispanic people are better at baseball than blacks," PERIOD!! Isn't more than enough that blacks run basketball and football with the palm of their hands? I mean instead of hating on Dominicans and other black players who are Hispanic, African Americans should step their game up and practice a bit harder like those under privileged players in other countries do. Oh and by the way just because your not from America doesn't mean your not black. America wasn't the only country who had slave ships shipped for sale. PEACE HOMIE!!! DALE
-
Natividad Marte 04/16/2010 7:58:00 PM
I'm a METS fan and love Gooden and Strawberry, but come'on! they drug addicts who threw their careers away. Why are you trying to be divisive Mr. Luke. Don't you realize that the highest paid players in baseball are Dominicans? That debunk your statement that they are willing to play for less. Dominicans play baseball since they can walk. They are not afraid of the sun, the heat, the hard training they just focus and master their game, that is why they are the BEST, regardless of their skin color (in case you haven't noticed, they come in different shades and shapes.

Jon 04/16/2010 9:10:00 AM
Instead of complaining about the lack of blacks in major league baseball, why don't you start bemoaning their absence among Rhodes Scholars? Sports are nice way to get paid, but 99.999999999999% of the successful people in the world aren't athletes or rappers. They're doctors, lawyers, bankers, scientists and businessmen and women. If I were you, I'd be more worried about quality and commitment to education in this country and less concerned about the racial makeup of a stupid game. In fact, I challenge you to ask Myron Rolle which *he* thinks is more important. Your next column could share what he has to say.
-
Jose A. 04/16/2010 8:06:00 AM
Actually, not only with Dominicans but with players from all of the latin american countries. I understand that this is a business decision ( not a racist decision)in which all of those very poor people suffer the consequences because the majority of those players never make it to the major leagues. The major league teams should at least guarantee to those players an small bonus if they don't make it so when they return to their countries they can start their lives ant way they see it fit. Even thought some of the major league teams ( owners ) are becoming more human, to the best of the best players they are giving them signing bonuses in the millions.

-
Mike 04/16/2010 7:47:00 AM
Luke and Tori Hunter are wrong. The fact is African-American kids, teens, adults have no interest in baseball not because of The MLB but because they themselves prefer Football and Basketball. If we go this route then why isn't there more Hispanic football players? Or basketball? It's not the NBA or NFL's fault, it's just comes down to preference and family influence. In the Hispanic community there are two loved sports Baseball and Fùtbol and kids aré pushed to these early on. In The Dominican Republic baseball has been king for as long as its been in the U.S. Race or ethnicity often comes with predetermined likes and dislikes, Mexicans love tortillas, Dominicans love platano, Italians pasta, blaming the MLB is stupid. Yes allot of Latin America is poor, beyond what U.S "ghettos" can understand, so anyone offered a better life would jump at the proposition...could it be Latinos are just that hungry for success?

Luke, with all due respect this is a good thing for young black men. Perhaps this will finally encourage the youth to pick up a book and decide to become a professional such as an accountant, doctor, etc. The odds of being able to become a well paid professional are at least 100 times greater than becoming a pro-sports player. The end of the false hope of being a pro-player will finally bring prosperiety to the black community
-

Lee....or mr. phd in racial relationships or something else from (capella or whatever online 399.00 university). if you want to take this personal, buckle up buddy. social economics studies shows blacks are behind in every category in USA economy. go to food stamps office, go to section 8 office, go to public housing, what do you see ??? why ? because they work hard ? this is a racist comment ? , it's Facts. In sports, talent and determination is primary factor to succeed. Just like basketball looking for tall and athletic and football looking for strong and athletic , Baseball is looking for a blend mostly found in whites and browns. to Lee again,go support your team, express your opinion and leave me alone.
-
pepe 04/15/2010 10:18:00 PM
First of all Dominicans, Puerto Ricans, Venezuelans, Cubans, Panamanians, Colombians, players from Curacao are not replacing African-Americans in baseball. Major League baseball, ESPN, Fox Sports are promoting the best players whether they are from the Dominican or other latin countries so be it. Just the same way the NBA promotes African-Americans. I don't see the NBA promoting Manu Ginobelli and he's from Argentina and an outstanding player.
Part of the problem is the lack of interest from young African-Americans towards baseball. I respect Torii Hunter for supporting baseball in the African-American communities, however, the payoff will be 5-10 years from now. MLB has supported the RBI program for years and prominent figures like Joe Morgan continue to attack baseball's effort.
Finally, I played in the Mexican League and I never remember EVER playing a game at midnight. Get your facts straight.
-
Steph Engpei 04/15/2010 9:18:00 PM
You are about as incorrect and a reverse racist as they come.
African American youth prefer basketball because they do not have to finish college to get PAID
once again; Asian youth, Carribean Youth they all go to school and get good grades and participate in sports whether it is baseball basketball Football NHL then off to College to develop a BRAIN as well as skills in that sport,
You .. sir are encouraging division amongst youth with this crap
and I use sir loosely

-
Mike 04/15/2010 7:14:00 PM
I dont see many latinos in the NFL or NBA, but yet not one latino complains. But since they are not the majority in something of course has to deal with racism, blacks bring on there own racism. Baseball is a latin sport period. You need to actually have talent, born to play baseball, just being an athletic freak doesnt fly like in football or basketball.
By the way marlins drafted two blacks from compton last year and also run an RBI program that is for inner city kids.

Baseball is about money, plain and simple. The fact remains that young Black kids rather play basketball or football because it is easier and faster money. To say Blacks are being replaced by Dominican is ludicrous and (I fell for it) a way to start controversy. Dominicans play baseball day and night, weekdays and holidays, to get out of the utter poverty around them. Next time to go to DR, check the towns and villages deep in the country. Kids are walking around with barely decent clothes and hunger seems to be the common denominator. I see empty baseball fields with lights, and then I see jammed basketball courts and football fields in the 'hood. Guess what sports Black kids are playing?

1st of all Dominicans come in every shade You have the Jose Reyes, Big Papi type, then you Alex Rodriguez, Albert Puljos and Carlos Pena. Hell Even Jorge Posada is Half Dominican And what ever color we end up being we are proud and that's something America could learn from us Caribbeans. Just look at Puerto Rico their greatest baseball hero is black a Puerto Rican, and no one cares that he is black he is loved by all on the Island. The Reasons why Black Americans are not playing Baseball in numbers anymore is because the don't want to, even when you go to black neighborhoods there are hardly any blacks playing baseball on their own, they instead play Basketball and Football because that's what they like, stop forcing a race to play something they are not interested in. Talent is talent people, they day blacks take an interest in Baseball again you will then see a lot of blacks Americans in the big leagues again.

Mr. Campbell, after reading your article, I can only assume that your literary contributions for Miami New Times are Pro-Bono.
Good luck with the burdened African-American paradox.
-
gerald 04/14/2010 10:00:00 PM
Mr. Campbell is right!! I have two children ( BLACK Americans )
who play baseball in South Miami Dade County. They are great players and the only Black Americans on the team or any team that they played on.
I refuse to let them stop playing because of that fact. They dominate in all areas and lead in statics. Every team in their
age divison wants them to play for them. They only want them for OUTFIELD and HITTING and running.
My fear is that at the High School level A lot of weathy parents
PAY BIG $$$$$$$ for their kids to play. The coaches do accept $$$$$$ in the form of sponsorship. And those kids who parents pay get looked at and promoted. My kids won't even get to play when the scouts come looking!!! ( FACT )
Mr. Campbell had it right but the color is not black: The color is GREEN!!!! $$$$$$$
Much love or Much MONEY !!!!

Good point, however dominicans are just as "black" as African Americans, what we are debating is symantics. We all are of African descent so to say that black dominicans or black cubans or black puerto ricans are not black is incorrect. To say that their expericence differs vastly from that of African Americans would be more accurate.

Lee 04/14/2010 7:38:00 PM
Pedro....an African-American who works hard is an oxymoron, really? It amazes me when people tell someone they are being racist and then they make racist statements? As an educator applying to Ph.D programs I'm an African-American who has and is working hard! Get over yourself! If you don't agree with the article thats fine but to put down an entire race thats racist! As far as the article most of you can't see things from another persons perspective. You automatically jump on the defensive. This is one persons perspective. Yes, many people from other countries cut out American citizens by being paid less thats not anything new; why act like its not true? I don't get the attitude. To Pedro again, I've heard many white men complain about being undercut because of immigrants would you then accuse them of being lazy? I doubt it!
-
Pedro 04/14/2010 7:14:00 PM
your friend told you all about it and you base your opinion on what a friend told you. Well, as a friend that you haven't met yet, I will really tell you all about the Dominicans players. They work hard to master the skill of playing baseball because they want to make money playing in MLB, If African americans worked hard (oxymoron) they will excel and be chosen to play in the big show (like a few i.e Dontrell Willis, a class act) . Just as you (maybe) work hard building a music career that allow you to rest in your laurels.

This guy really gets paid to write this crap? We are getting sick and tire of this me poor black crap and I call for the cancellation of Affirmative Action. White, Black or Yellow, you want to get ahead, Work for it baby.
The interesting thing is that all this black suffering reteric is comming from people that have not suffered crap, the slaves were a long time ago.

Luke sees a racist behind every tree. According to Luke's warped views, I suppose Manny Ramirez, the Big Papi, Alex Rodriguez and Pujol came cheap and make pennies in the major leagues. The issue is about perspectives. In Latin America, baseball is a lottery ticket and a way out no matter what. It's all about working hard (how bad you want somethin gin life) and talent. Also, in the USA a Black Dominican baseball player may identify as Latin or Dominican but many in the USA will see him as non-white. But what's the big deal in these modern times. We all have our own identity, cultural pride and prejudices, and insecurities. It's the human condition. The only true dominant color is GREEN. We learned that from OJ.

Cal 04/14/2010 5:58:00 PM
This has affected White Americans more than black americans.
-
MD 04/14/2010 4:59:00 PM
Stupid article.
First, with the way most teams spend money, they don't care who the player is, as long as he can play. Are you telling me that if Black Player X is better than Latino prospect X, a team is not going to sign the Black player and improve their team?? Once that player is looked over, assuming he's good, another team will come in pick him up immediately.
Second, if your theory is true, which is not, than you can make a case for white american players and european/latin players. Is the NBa trying to phase out the white player with foreign players and appease the American viewers with "imposter" whites?? Like with everything any job, the best available person should be working/playing.
Third, MLB does have a program for reintroducing black players to baseball its called R.B.I. which has been around for about TWENTY years!
Finally, after reading this article is seems like you were trying to insinuate that Black Latinos are not like Black non-latino players because they don't or have never suffered like black Americans. B.S.! I can give you a ton of names, but here is one (greatest cuban pitcher) Try reading about Luis Tiant. This guy suffered. His homeland told him not to come back, blacks didn't accept him, whites were prejudicial against him, he went through the same segregation as other blacks, but probably worse.
So before you make your next racist article, please get your facts straight.

I live in Florida, and am a fan of the Marlins. They always had African American players on their roster. Many of their best players were black, for example: Gary Sheffield, Charles Johnson, Cliff Floyd, Derek Lee, etc. They (Marlins) are not supporting the Latin American and Mexican farm systems your "former pro baseball player who is now a minor league coach" told you about. So why point out that the Marlins are not supporting an after school sports club in Miami? That's not exactly the last stop before entering the Majors. Nothing written there in your article has a shred of proof that major league baseball teams are "phasing out" the black man.

Defending Dominicans 04/14/2010 11:38:00 AM
Wow look at the hate. I am surprised to read an article written by a member of the black race, a race that wrongfully gets oppressed by mainstream American. Then he turns around and does it to another race. Dominicans are built for playing baseball and that's the reason why there's so many scouts looking for talent in Dominican Republic. Do you think that the NBA consists of mostly African-American players because the Association encourages the sport of basketball in every black inner-city? Not at all. It's because African-Americans are built for the sport the same way that dominicans are built for baseball. He's actually not doing his homework when he says that they "get top-of-the-line Dominican players at a bargain price". Minor league pay is very cheap even here in the US. Ask about minor league players who have to get a second even a third regular job to make it...and they play in the US. I was born in DR and the passion for the sport for males starts at an early age. I've seen young kids from here and from there and the desire to play baseball is not the same. If they can't afford to buy baseballs, they use oranges and lemons and broomsticks to play. Uncle Luke your comment here is no different than Larry Bird's comment when he said that there should be more white superstars in the NBA. If your comment was mainstream, you'd be forced to apologize the same way that Torii Hunter did. Comments like yours and Hunters work to degrade the pretigious Negro Leagues. And don't forget that black latinos players in the early days were part of the Negro Leagues. In the 90s you said "I Got S___t On My Mind"...are you writing this article now to justify it? Please reconsider.

Jim 04/14/2010 7:52:00 AM
JoeBlow, you make several interesting points. First batting .300, hitting 30 hr's and 100+ rbi's goes a long way with a team owner. Then there's the issue of those players being successful and not knowing a thing about MLK. One flaw there though, the Africans that were first slaves bought off the boat were just that too, every bit the slaves as those that wound up on the continental US. and lastly, the black vs Caribbean black issue, I've noticed that myself, there's racism amongst black people. They are just as guilty of discrimination and prejudice as anyone, but it's ok for a black person to call another black person, "nigger" ?

Gee 04/14/2010 7:20:00 AM
Luke was a great musician, but every single one of his pieces on NewTimes so far has been retarded. Please stick to music as writing is obviously not your cup of tea.
Dominican players get American agents and make the same amount of money as players of any other ethnicity based on their value. Hanley Ramirez is going to make $7 million in 2010, he's not working for sweatshop wages.
-
Rausky 04/14/2010 6:54:00 AM
This guy is an ASS like the rest of them are! He's just jealous when people from other countries work hard, sacrifice, and study and become successful, while his people sit on their lazy asses, and rob, steal and pillage. Like always, ass holes like him always want to use the race card, cause the majority of his people are a bunch of low life free loaders, that very few of them work, stay out of trouble, and support their families.

ivan 04/14/2010 6:46:00 AM
As a Dominican, I am so deeply offended by your hate article.
My countrymen suffer poverty as you cant dream about. They have no access to education, shelter, health services, communication, nutrition... At least when 1 out of 50,000 kids make it to pro baseball fucking admit the guy spend his whole life working for his dream and he, is ALWAYS A VERY SKILLED/TALENTED PLAYER that made it for being better than the competition.
Dominican players are not picked on a conscious attempt to substitute your whining asses. Dominican players get the job done, they have a lot to whine about yet put all their difficulties aside to become better players. And we certainly dont need a racist like you to come say we are not black enough for your entitlement dreams. we do not care about being black, we know we have to work in order to make a living, NOT EXPECT PEOPLE TO GIVE US A FREE MEAL CAUSE WE WERE OPPRESSED IN THE PAST HERE IN THE CARIBBEAN PROBABLY MORE THAN YOU IN NORTH AMERICA.
We might have no one to speak on our behalf but we earn our place in the field with talent. If you cant see it its because your hate is already too rampant
-
JoeBlow 04/14/2010 5:22:00 AM
Are you saying that MLB go to Dominican Republic looking for black-hispanic baseball players only to replace black Americans??? I guess the fact that they (black-Hispanics)can bat for .300, 30 HR, 100+ RBIs has nothing to do with it?
So what if the Dominicans were German descendants and as good baseball players? Wouldn't MLB go after them as well?? hell yeah!
You and Torii Hunter, are hurt because black-hispanics are becoming successful in this country and don't even know who Martin Luther King was. You hate the fact they get a "free pass"...and I get, but just have the balls to call it for what it is!
This is a Black vs Black-Hispanics issue and not MLBs.

Actually, Luke is brilliant, a genius ? Luke at his picture ? Does he look like a stupid man ? I say no, but he sure as heck stirred up a pot here with his article. The world isn't fair, there are going to be those in all races that are probably better than the other guy and not wind up with a better paying job or wind up in professional sports in this case. He's actually no different than Rush Limbaugh or could he be proving Rush Limbaugh right. The media wanting a black baseball player to so desperately succeed beyond any other race ? My response earlier was out of enraged fury, how dare he attack the game I prefer to watch after football or possibly basketball ? At the end of the day, when I watch baseball, I'm cheering for my team. Every race, Asian, black, Caribbean black, caucasian, Hawaiian Pacific Islander. I don't want any one of them to make an out. I want them all to get hits and score runs, after all they are a culturally diverse baseball team, my team.

This has to be the most ridiculous piece I've read in a while. For starters, until this year that Dan Uggla was signed for $8 million per year to avoid arbitration, the highest paid Florida Marlins player was a black Dominican, Hanley Ramirez at $7 million. So, where is the “cheap labor” you cite in this article?
Your article is an insult to Dominican Players. The reality is that it has nothing to do with the white-man’s big plan against the African Americans, and everything to do with talent. When it comes to baseball my friend the Dominicans of any color, to put it mildly, trounce the African Americans. That’s the real truth and that is why they are playing in the majors. You think there is poverty in your neighborhoods? The Dominicans have such a need that they don’t have time to whimper and moan. What support do Dominicans have? Have you been there? Well, I have and several times. In many small towns kids stage pickup games wherever there is an empty filed and play with rocks and a stick. No gloves.
As usual, it is always someone else’s fault whenever an African American does not succeed at something. It’s no wonder as a group you continue to struggle to move out of the projects, the hoods, and out of welfare. It is the attitude of people like you and every other black leader including Al Sharpton and Jessie Jackson that relentlessly feeds to the ridiculous idea that everyone is against the American black-man. I suppose you haven’t realized that the United States has a black president, which by the way was elected by white people. Enough with the racism card!!! Stop blaming other and take some responsiblity.
-
Wally 04/14/2010 3:07:00 AM
Better take your foot out of you mouth and research the RBI program (Reintroduce Baseball to the Inner-cities). It is sponsored by Major League baseball with the purpose of getting more minority kids playing the game.

Im not sure what u mean by thier arent black..There are black dominicans, white dominicans, etc..They surely are black, just not African-American. Learn the difference between race and ethnicity.
-
independentthinker 04/14/2010 2:03:00 AM
It is apparent from this article that Luke is incapable of intelligent social commentary. More effort needs to be devoted to encouraging African American kids to play baseball? How about we devote more effort toward proper care and education for our children. Baseball for African Americans? Is this like midnight basketball proposed by Clinton? Time to replace Luke with someone worth reading....a Dominican perhaps?
-
Jim 04/14/2010 1:35:00 AM
Oh no, now the Caribbean Island blacks are in collusion with caucasian ownership to discriminate against African Americans ? The scheme is to use Dominicans and fool the fans into believing that the MLB is culturally diverse ? Even more ludicrous it's financially motivated to keep the black man down. Stop playing the race card, Last I checked Alex Rodriguez made more than any caucasian player does in the MLB.
-
David 04/14/2010 1:32:00 AM
Why do you think they are so dark-skinned? They are mixed with African as well...
And I don't think anybody has "plans" to replace all the African Americans with Dominicans... it's just happening...
