Normally, a sophomore album from the son of a guitar genius is likely to get panned by critics. But those factors can't eclipse the skill and intuition of Malian guitarist Vieux Farka Touré. You might remember his father, Ali Farka Touré, whose Grammy-winning Savane led us to believe Delta blues was invented in West Africa.

His son's second album, Fondo, maintains the Malian edge of chanting vocals and fluid guitar riffs, but it also plays with contemporary Western influences. You'll hear hints of dub, reggae, funk, and classic rock. Those who saw the young Touré at last year's Bonnaroo Music Festival compared him to Eric Clapton and the Allman Brothers. It was a performance that inspired Spin to award him with Best Unexpected Guitar Heroics.

This Saturday, Touré plays the TransAtlantic Festival at the North Beach Bandshell. He'll share the bill with Miami fusionistas Locos por Juana.
