If Bob Were Brazilian

Being compared to Bob Dylan, one of the greatest and most incisive songwriters of our time, is an honor for any musician — unless the comparison refers to hair. It’s a lot to live up to, and yet, Brazil’s Caetano Veloso has succeeded over the course of his 45-year career. The singer-songwriter and guitarist is considered, along with Gilberto Gil, one of the pioneers of the country’s famed avant-garde Tropicalia or Tropicalismo movement of the ’60s. Veloso has been a shape-shifter, though, merging genres such as Brazilian folk, rock, fado, and tango.

Catch him live this Tuesday at the Fillmore Miami Beach, where the multiple Grammy winner will demonstrate what Bob Dylan would have sounded like if he were a Brazilian guy with great hair.
Tue., April 20, 8 p.m., 2010
