For 56 years, James "Jimbo" Luznar has operated a bocce ball, beer, and smoked-fish shack on the northeast edge of Virginia Key. Named basically by default, it's known to ex-shrimpers, hippies, and frat boys as Jimbo's Place, a lawless yet low-key hideaway from the urban shitstorm of mainland Miami.

A few months ago, however, the City of Miami decided it was time for a crackdown on Luznar's ramshackle resort. A $5 entry fee was enacted, and warnings were issued about the random junk — dead cars, dilapidated Bahama shacks, piles of dumped trash, etc. — that cluttered Jimbo's yard. Then, after a fire on the property, the electricity was cut, leaving the joint powered by generators for the past 100 days.

Nevertheless, Jimbo's 84th Birthday Party will go off as previously planned. It's just that, unlike previous years, this get-together won't be simply a celebration of drunken games, good times, and BYOB. This Sunday's party will also be a chance to organize Jimbo's friends for a final push to save the place. Be there.
