I think the question is why aren't these famous people with more money than God carrying permits with these guns. If they had an illegal gun, and shot somebody to protect themselves, then they would still be arrested. The only legitimate way to shoot someone is to have a permit for such things. I mean, I understand that if you're hurt and hustling that you cant get a gun permit. I have no question why my fellow hustlers get arrested with illegal guns. If one of these hustlers makes millions off of rap, its stupid for them to own illegal guns. Fact. Uncle Luke, you seemed to completely sidestep the real question at hand. Nobody is asking why they had a gun, they are asking why they have illegal guns. Duh

You might as well have me writing a column for you as Luke. What qualifies him other than his 15 minutes of ill-fame as the most degenerate of the bootie slappin' and clappin' rappers? That's what society has come down to. On top of that, he is playing wet nurse to any "in trouble" African American who happens upon his radar screen (Spence-Jones, Sapp, Irvin, Teele, Lil Wayne, etc.). Next we'll be hearing how Doc Gooden and Lawrence Taylor got raw deals because of their cocaine addiction. To top it all off, he's asking for a black mayor. That's racist. How would New Times or any other news outlet in Miami react if an Anglo or Hispanic called for a mayor of their ethnic persuasion? How about the most qualified mayor we can find? If they're purple with blue polka dots, OK by me. Race is the game the federal government encourages us to play so we take our collective eyes off the ball. Give me a break. Having the self styled pseudo-intellectual original gangster rapper as a column writer, especially given what he has written so far, only undermines and subverts the credibility of an otherwise fine paper the same way it did when UM's football program made the stultifying decision to allow Luke on their sideline.

all i have to say is this, if you don't trust the ones around you then you need to re-thing and re-consider your choice of friends. in addition, it's usually the friends and homeboys that get these rappers into shit and have them stuck with the "in da hood" mindset. once you reach a certain caliber and are not of the SAVAGE mindset then you should elevate the people that surround you and you should change the places you used to hang out. as the Bible says, "When I was a child, I talked like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I put childish ways behind me." 1 Corinthians 13:11

I think all law abiding citizens should be able to carry guns. If this would have been the case then Lil Wayne could have had a permit and not got into trouble. I don't trust them either Uncle Luke, and we used to hang out at Manhattan's in South Miami in the late 80's. I was always there with Breezy Beat Mc, and hung with you a whole bunch of times. So I know exactly what you mean about keeping up with the game....

It is sad that any individual must try to take what a person has worked hard to get in life whether it is money, jewelry, cars, etc. I feel that the thugs of the world need to "man-up" and quit trying to take from people. Who knows--the thugs just might be as talented as the rich people they are trying to take from? The thugs energy should be on trying to bring out they're inner ambitions-be it rapping, singing, or business related. Think about that thugs and then maybe everyone will have their riches and there will be no need to take from people-hence, no reason for carrying the guns. CAN WE ALL JUST GET RICH?????

I would really like to see the author of this article come back and address legality issues here instead of leading the audience on by dropping big names and saying these individuals get arrested for exercising their "rights". All of our Constitutional rights have stipulations. The right to gather and free speech only refers to government property and certain stipulations may require a permit to gather if too many people are expected. The right to bear arms is no different. In most states there is a carry permit required and some states may allow for open carry with no permit or safety course requirements. However, municipalities may limit concealed or open carry in specific places or establishments due to public safety requirements. They're allowed to do that even under the most broad interpretation of the constitution.
I really do hope the author comes back and finishes this article. Right now it reads like that of a current events mention from a middle school child with ADD. To the author: please, don't perpetuate a stereotype that those who associate with rap culture are ignorant by posting such unintelligible blather. You're really only doing a disservice to the truly intelligent individuals within this industry. Kinda like "bigBoi"...the word "boi" has been used to describe butch lesbians since that man was in dipers...it just kinda makes him look dumb. Do better by yourself and your peers.
-
Lala 03/29/2010 1:58:00 AM
Funny, this article never even addresses what the title says it will. It talks about the constitutional right to bear arms, but then doesn't discuss why these rappers right to bear arms was effectively denied. It doesn't mention laws on permits, concealed or otherwise, or whether any of the rappers discussed in the article have the permits. I never questioned why these guys need to carry a weapon, I read the article to find out why they got arrested despite their constitutional right - did they not have permits? Did they have the wrong permit? Did they have the right permit and violated it? A little more research would have gone a long way.

You know the game, and you are exactly right. For those who didn't understand this, after reading your article it should be crystal clear. These guys are not thugs..they simply need their own protection. It should also be noted that the police also use these high profile examples to put the word on the street to deter gun ownership.
Either way, Lil Wayne did the right thing for owning up to his gun. If someone on his staff would have taken the fall, they likely would have rolled over when faced with time, or talked about it for some $$ on the way out of their stay with Uncle Sam.

Jorge de Tuya 03/26/2010 9:52:00 PM
We all! have the right to bear arms. Read the second amendment. I may not like their music or their polital views, but they still have the rights afforded to them under the constitution. What if someone gets past the body guards. Whats the guy supposed to do through spit balls? Every American should own a gun.

Not for nothing, but you're trumpeting the whole "police vs. rapper" stereotype. Guess what? African Americans are no different than Anglo-Americans now. Debatable? Not at all. Eminem had a gun once and got two years probation. The BIG difference? Lil' Wayne was caught with possession, drugs with the intent to sell, misconduct involving weapons, and the possession of drug instruments all at the same time. THAT equals jailtime. Why? What if you or I had those things on us when a cop pulled us over. Don't blame the police; they did their job. Blame the stupidity which is rap society. "They're monitoring rapper"? Give me a break. If it fits the bill, which it does (ever listen to a rap song?), then screw it. Stop complaining about the police. Believe it or not; there are African American police!
You're also being racist by stating "rapping about the birds and the bees for white people." That is a clear-cut racist remark. African Americans have BET. What if Anglo Americans had WET? Better yet, the U.S. government gives African Americans COUNTLESS scholarships. What if they gave ONE to Anglo Americans? You'd be outraged. Get over the whole "they're treating us wrong. Woe is us" claim. Slavery ended how many centuries ago? My girlfriend is Jewish. Try that on for size before you bitch all the time. Believe it or not, African Americans can be guilty of racism. You are guilty of racism.

Luke, I would agree that these people and yourself have a constitutional right to bear arms, but only as long as they are not convicted felons or charged with crimes of domestic abuse. But for you to imply guns in clubs are OK is wrong. Guns in clubs are specifically prohibited under Florida law. Only criminals have guns in clubs. I know its not right for law abiding citizens with concealed carry permits to be prohibited from carrying ANYWHERE, but that's the law. Please dont suggest something that would possible turn a law abiding citizen into a criminal.
-
Jade 03/24/2010 7:19:00 PM
um the rappers who carry weapons are dumb...get a permit...get a concealed weapons permit but you don't go around wielding weapons in a law abiding society
-
Wow 03/24/2010 5:54:00 PM
You just sound like an idiot. That was a poorly written article and it is easy to see youre not educated. Im sure they do need body guards and guns because people are out for the rich and famous, but how would you know anything about that. And yea Im sure "you" made it all possible for lil wayne and T.I. They couldnt have done it with out youre support.
-
Tron 03/24/2010 5:12:00 PM
That’s all B/S we all have the right to carry a weapon if you have the proper permits to do so which I do. When you’re hauling a weapon and no permits, they deserve to go to jail, and I think LIL got off way to easy at one year.

"Rapping about the birds and the bees for white people." Sums up a lot. Keep your eye on this.
for white people?i bet most of the rappers income music wise comes from the "white people"..i think somebody is a lil racist eh!.....hmmmmmm....thats funny....they have enough money to back themselves with armed body guards...going to jail is part of the game aint it?i say f*ck them...my ass would be going to jail so why should i give a f*ck!!!

Brilliant, Luther, you spend half the article 'splaining why (c)rappers have to protect themselves in public, then disclose that one knucklehead got busted on his tour bus. You were responsible for many young black kids going the wrong way, but as long as the money was good who cares? Yet you want to come across as a black spokesperson, when in reality all you are is an ignorant pos.

Miami Springs Dave 03/23/2010 10:42:00 PM
Thats my dog Luke... speak the truth cuz
-
Gee 03/23/2010 10:12:00 PM
Nonsense.
If they really need a gun then they either need to get into a new line of work, or they need to take formal weapons training and get a carry permit so they can carry legally. These people have enough money for that. Without formal training, if they get jacked and try to defend themselves, they're just going to end up dead instead of robbed. Also, which is worse: getting jacked for your jewelry, or missing a year or more of income because you're in the pokey?
And finally, it's all BS. We all know they're not carrying because they need to protect themselves, they're carrying because it's part of the culture of what they're into. So they're becoming part of the problem.
You say TI is a good kid, but he was caught buying machine guns and silencers. You don't need machine guns and silencers for self defense because you're playing in a seedy night club. You need machine guns and silencers to commit murder, or to project an image of somebody that commits murder.
