The old-timey tradition of having some guy play the piano while moving pictures dance on the wall is something that goes all the way back to the Lumière brothers' earliest experiments. Unfortunately, the whole live music movie scene pretty much died in 1927 when Al Jolson and The Jazz Singerhoofed into theaters with their fancy talkie technology.

That said, 80-odd years of obsolescence doesn't discourage Roofless Records label head Matt Preira. This Saturday, he and his cohorts will present a spectacle of simultaneous music and images called Cinema Sounds No. 6 at the Tower Theater. Preira says, "The major parameter I give the bands is to strive toward the illusion that what the audience hears them playing could actually be the score." So expect original scores by local sonic experimenters Animal Tropical, Teepee, Slashpine, and Goatslacker. The actual movies being soundtracked, though, will remain a secret until showtime.
