Thanks to Marion Manley, our pre-1945 houses were literal iceboxes this past winter. With cold tile floors and rooms built for cross ventilation, they were clearly built for a place where the mercury rarely dips below 45 degrees. Miami's first female architect, Manley designed houses in Morningside, Coral Gables, and Miami Shores. Florida granted Manley a license to practice architecture two years before the federal courts gave her (and all women) the right to vote. She designed Mediterranean-style dwellings in the hopes of luring Northern tourists. But she later abandoned this architecture as "pseudo-Spanish," finding her own style to be more in line with Le Corbusier. She's now known for her midcentury modernist buildings on the University of Miami campus.

UM architecture professors Catherine Lynn and Carie Penbad will read from their book, Marion Manley: Miami's First Woman Architect, at Books & Books this Friday.
