It's been more than 20 years since the Alliance Theatre Lab's artistic director, Adalberto Acevedo, first read Lyle Kessler's play Orphans. But all along, he has been plotting his own version. "I had always planned to have my own company," Acevedo says. "And this was on the list of plays that I must do."

Originally produced by Chicago's Steppenwolf Theatre in 1985, Orphans is the story of two brothers, Phillip and Treat, who've lost their parents. They fend for themselves in the streets of North Philly, eventually kidnapping an older man, Harold, who slowly evolves into a strange kind of surrogate parent. As Acevedo puts it: "It's a riff on fathers and sons. It's all about how families are sometimes made and not born."

The Alliance Theatre Lab will perform its version of Orphans at the Main Street Playhouse through April 4.
Thursdays, Fridays, 8 p.m.; Saturdays, 5 p.m.; Sundays, 2 p.m. Starts: March 26. Continues through April 4, 2010
