Suspended Miami Commissioner Michelle Spence-Jones's Café Soul gets evicted

Sometimes Riptide likes to reminisce about our long and circuitous relationship with Michelle Spence-Jones. Like the good ol' days, last June, when she was still Overtown/Liberty City commissioner and we were trying to track her down for comment about her involvement in the case of since-convicted grand thief Rev. Gaston E. Smith. We knew we would find her at Café Soul, the Liberty City eatery owned by her family's company, Karym Ventures. We ate a pressed tuna salad sandwich and drank a bottle of Orangina while she chatted with constituents.

A bit on the dry side, it was not the best sandwich Riptide has ever used as an excuse to lurk somewhere. But it did the job: Eventually, Spence-Jones gave us a big, smiling "No comment." Say what you will about her, but even when she's blowing you off, the suspended commissioner makes it sound like she's offering you a slice of rhubarb pie.

However, Café Soul, along with the neighboring Yellow Moon Spa, also owned by her family, has always exhibited some very Spence-Jonesian finances — characterized by the nose-crinkling mixture of personal business interests, political cronyism, and government funds — that includes the alleged theft of $50,000 in county grant money to spend on the businesses.

In the aftermath of the indictment, Gov. Charlie Crist has suspended her twice, and the once-proud café, plastered with campaign posters for political allies and known for poetry slams, is up for rent. In late 2009, Karym Ventures was evicted from the location after the group didn't pay rent for two years, according to the landlord, Able Traders LLC. The abandoned café and spa are still stocked with Karym's furniture, and this past January, a judge gave the group permission to take back its belongings.

Ever inquisitive, we called the number on the For Rent sign and learned the owners are asking for $1,000 to $1,100 a month for the café property. "But you should know," warned the real estate agent, "this place is not set up properly at all to be a restaurant. There's no working kitchen or bathroom."

All of that county cash, and the place lacked basic amenities? Like we said: Spence-Jonesian finances.

We called the ex-commish herself, and after quickly denying Karym had been evicted — despite the pink eviction notice on the front door — Spence-Jones promised to call back in "two minutes." She did not.

In other words, she blew us off. But ever so sweetly.

March 5th, 2010 Spence-Jones is in handcuffs again. Accused of shaking down two developers for $12,500 each. What charges are still pending? Her staff being investigated?

Michelle Spence-Jones is her own worst enemy. She thought she was above the law. Allegedly stealing money? Forgery? Making $150,000 per year policemen pick up her kid at day care? "Strongly encouraging" developers to pay her friends? Talking about herself... "Spence-Jones don't smoke crack..."? She shoots herself in the foot.

Evicted? Business closed? $50,000 disappeared? It is amazing this woman got the responsibility to vote on the $500 Million City of Miami budget. No wonder Miami is facing bankruptcy again.

Is it true Spence-Jones did not pay rent for two years? Did she have any employees? Did they all get fired?

  • CHARLES ANDREWS 02/05/2010 2:12:00 AM

SHE'S A BUM...MAN YOU HAVE TO RIP-OFF YOUR LANDLORD TOO

  • JWK 02/03/2010 9:06:00 PM

Its funny how this con-artist and thief is able to get a certificate of occupancy to operate this so-called restaurant, without a bathroom. I can't wipe my own ass in my own restaurant without getting a permit.

As to the case against Michelle Spence-Jones, it is only the tip of the camels nose. The media writes articles about this particular polititan. Though unfortunatley, questions to a particular Sweetwater Police Officer Mario Blas Miranda. To which, until this day, it has been alegated that the police officer had committed acts of malfeasance in an estate and trust. Furthermore, this individual had forged the will and trust documents without the knowledge nor consent of the deceased businessman. As also, used the funds from the estate to open his own Wine Restaurant on Southwest Eight street and later sold it at an undisclosed profit. The shareholders were ripped off and one of the buyers of the estate property was charged and arrested for organized fraud exceeding 50,000. But yet, after this incident with the police officer was reported, the Miami Dade Police Department Public Corruptions Division gave the officer a pass and left the case colder than ice. This case involved a 2.1 million dollar shopping center at the Miami River Fork and a 38 foot boat. The case is going before a Probate Court Judge this coming June 7, where the officer is facing these charges. Where is the justice in all of this?

The moral of your story is if you are a well connected politically the City tends to turn an eye away from any of your transgressions. Unfortunately, this would not be the case for anyone of us that want to do business legitimately. I have a question and this may be a good topic for your next article. How did Cafoul obtain an occupational license for business for a Caff they had no kitchen or running water? Did they have health certificates from the county or was Cafoul allowed to operate illegally because it was owned by Ex-Commissioner Spence-Jones. I am certain if the State Attorneys office dug a little deeper the 50K wouldnt be the only thing being implicated against Spence-Jones. The entire political system needs to be trashed BRING TERM LIMITS TO ALL LEVELS OF GOVERNMENT and lets get rid of those elected officials that have been in office for so many years. Someone needs to bring in an industrial broom and sweep these people out of office and put them all behind bars! They absolutely have no interest in anything but their own pockets, and that of family and friends. One day the State of Florida will grow up and allow for a major house cleaning in Miami Dade County, the only way this will happen is if the FBI, FDLE, ATTORNEY GENERAL, send a task force and investigate the wrong doings in this county. The reason why they wont send a task force is they dont want the public Aka Tax Payers to know what they already know. The corruption runs high and deep along the political lines here in Miami-Dade County.
