The Village People have a little ditty that guarantees the YMCA (Young Men’s Christian Association) will never be erased from the American consciousness. But what you might not know about your favorite karaoke song is that its namesake, which began in 1844 as a do-good Protestant initiative for innocent young guys, was once the place for gay men to get it on. In 1964, President Lyndon B. Johnson’s aide, Walter Jenkins, was caught in the bathroom giving head to a macho, macho man, and in 1912, a Portland newspaper broke the story that the local YMCA branch was the place to be for a friendly game of sodomy. These days, the organization is an awesome place for families. Lucky you, Allapattah now has a YMCA Family Branch to call its own. So hit the grand opening to tour the new facility, meet the staff, and eat up all the free food. Trust us — you’ll be glad this safe haven is rolling into town.
