Putting the Ew Back in Musical

The popular appetite for freakiness is well documented. Way back when, we flocked to circus sideshows starring midgets, hermaphrodites, and lobstermen. Then, as basic humanity prevailed, we turned to more socially acceptable showcases for the bizarre, such as The Jerry Springer Show and MTV's Jersey Shore. But now we've found another pipeline — The Great American Trailer Park Musical — to feed our huge collective hunger for human monstrosities, total insanity, and a few good chuckles.

Opening January 15 at 7:30 p.m. and running through February 7, the campy and delightfully sleazy comedy is gonna rip through Actors' Playhouse at the Miracle Theater like a tornado through a secondhand single-wide. With songs by David Nehls and a book by Betsey Kelso, the show twists across America's pop music landscape from rock to disco to R&B. Best of all, though, it's rife with the kind of freakiness we crave. As the website will tell you, expect "murderous ex-boyfriends, the Ice Capades, and a stripper on the run who becomes a Dr. Phil-loving agoraphobic housewife."
Fri., Jan. 15, 7:30 p.m.; Wednesdays-Saturdays, 8 p.m.; Sundays, 2 p.m. Starts: Jan. 15. Continues through Feb. 7, 2010
