Calling All Rubes

Itinerant showman and venerable con artist Phineas Taylor Barnum once infamously remarked, “There’s a sucker born every minute.” So let’s make this easy, you mark. Just line up, give up your bucks, and get those tickets, ’cause it’s that time again — the circus is coming to town.

This Friday at 7:30 p.m., the “Greatest Show on Earth” will pitch its tent at the American Airlines Arena as Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey brings Zing Zang Zoom to Miami’s masses. A so-called “thrill-filled, mind-blowing circus spectacular,” the spectacle will offer the usual cavalcade of tigers and elephants, human cannonballs, high-wire walkers, and trapeze artists.

An unexpected twist, however, is the pseudo-hippie, PC spin on things. To prove the modern circus — unlike its notoriously opportunistic forefather, old P.T. — sees you as something other than a dollar sign, organizers have brought in Magical Zingmaster Alex and his assistant Levitytia to manage your mind trip and “celebrate the uplifting spirit of the circus” while doing battle against the “cynical Mr. Gravity and his team of Heavies who try to bring everyone down.” Sounds like a confidence job, huh? Tickets cost $16 to $95.
Fri., Jan. 8, 7:30 p.m., 2010
