Begun in 1948, the Junior Orange Bowl is one of those unconsciously received facts of reality for people who grow up in Miami, as if its completely natural to host a world-class youth bowling tournament, golf tournament, and tennis tournament all at once. Let the New Times answer definitively: Its kind of random. But also completely awesome. And the most awesome aspect, because its also the most dated, is the Junior Orange Bowl Parade.
Taking over downtown Coral Gables beginning at 6 p.m. this Saturday, the parade will celebrate its 61st year of elaborate floats, marching bands, flying batons, and other festive conglomerates of fun that havent truly been popular since before the advent of television. Kids would probably rather stay home and play videogames, but kids never know whats best for them. Theres something about a parade that brings out the majesty of the imagination and allows certain enterprising youths to sneak away and cop that first feel under the bleachers. Tickets cost $12.
