They Work Hard for the Money

Blood roars forth with geyser-like ferocity from a cut atop the eye of a smashed-up loser. Hey, boxing is brutal — that’s why we love it. So what happens when four Cubans, a Dominican, and a Turk enter the squared circle? There can be only one champion in each of the several fights that make up the Back Alley Brawl at La Covacha this Friday.

The fighters will include Olympic gold medalist Felix Diaz, two Cuban Olympians, a contender, and an amateur champ. The 7 p.m. brawl will be televised in 50 countries on channels accessible in 120 million homes, but none of those TV screens will be high-def enough to show the Dade County ring girls in all of their glory. For those ladies alone, you need to be there in person. Tickets cost $35 for general admission, $100 for VIP, and $200 for VIP with dinner. At fight’s end, a blood-sport-adrenalized crowd will explode with the intensity of a knockout punch into hard-core, late-night, animalistic revelry.
Fri., Dec. 4, 7 p.m., 2009
