If youre into both numerology and astronomy, 2009 is your year. Why? Its not only the 40th anniversary of the Apollo 11 lunar landing but also the 400th anniversary of Galileo's invention of the astronomical telescope. And the intelligent folks over at FIUs Music Department found another coincidence that theyve exploited for their fall opera production: this year also marks the 200th anniversary of the death of Joseph Haydn.
Haydn wrote the sumptuous opera buffa Il mondo della luna (The World on the Moon) first for the Venice Carnival, and then reworked it for the wedding of his patrons son. Equal parts comedy and romance, the opera has the tone of Shakespeares A Midsummer Nights Dream and is always a crowd pleaser. FIUs production is directed by Robert Dundas and premieres this Saturday night.
