It has been described as “music among friends” and in the case of a string quartet “four friends conversing.” Regardless, chamber music, which dates back to the early days of the Renaissance, is usually played in a small room for a small gathering. This Sunday at Thomas W. Lamb’s intimate art deco jewel on Miami Beach, the Lincoln Theatre, the New World Symphony will play five various examples that offer a glimpse into the world of Vienna of the late 1700s to the mid-1800s. “Old Vienna” starts with Franz Schubert’s Quartet No. 12 in C Minor for Stings, also known as “Quartettsatz,” then moves on to Gustav Mahler’s Quartet in A Minor for Piano and Strings; Arnold Schoenberg’s arrangement of Johan Strauss Jr.’s “Emperor Waltzes”; Richard Strauss’ Serenade in E-flat Major for 13 Wind Instruments and back to Schubert for his Trio No. 1 in B-flat Major for violin, cello and piano.
