Balls Away

Back when we were in college — imagine dinosaurs roaming the campus — joining the rugby team was just an excuse to drink more beer. The matches didn’t last very long, and as soon as the whistle blew, both teams huddled around a keg and sang naughty songs while seeing who could chug the fastest. Believe it or not, some men are lucky enough to turn this activity into a career and represent their country.

The athletes who will be on the field at Central Broward County Regional Park this Saturday for the USA vs. Uruguay Rugby World Cup Qualifierlikely will be sober, dedicated freaks of nature with hyper-focused mindsets. The stakes are certainly high enough; both squads have had a rocky time qualifying and are in desperate need of a win to advance. History is on the side of the Yanks — they’re 9-1 all-time versus “Los Teros” — but victory isn’t assured. As some fat guy from ESPN always says, “That’s why they play the games.” The mucking begins at 2 p.m.
Sat., Nov. 21, 2 p.m., 2009
