Want to watch two teams of robbers compete to steal bank money in a fast-paced and humorous short film? Of course you do. The One Last Time, an eight-minute film written and directed by Scott Weintrob, kicks off the Miami Short Film Festival’s night of Pulse-Pounding Cinema, a series of seven short films intended to push audiences to the edges of their seats and tug at their heartstrings.

“All of these films are very different,” says Jaie Laplante, the festival’s program director. “But they’ll all get you excited.” To wit, The One Last Time is followed by Short Term 12, the touching story of a man who must contend with caring for 15 troubled youths. The film won the Jury Prize in Short Filmmaking at this year’s Sundance Film Festival and has perhaps the best log-line in the history of cinema: “A film about kids and the grown-ups who hit them.” “To me, it’s the film that gets you most engaged emotionally,” Laplante says. The program starts at 8 p.m. at the Bill Cosford Cinema
