Do people even know this Wednesday is Veteran’s Day? Or the reason why it’s celebrated November 11? For the historically or Google-impaired, it’s the day in 1918 when the Germans signed the armistice treaty, ending World War I. Back in the day, every town in America had a huge parade and men wore a poppy in their coat lapels.

It might be too hot for a coat, but the weather will be perfect for the Miami Beach Veterans Day Parade and Picnic, hosted by the American Legion Miami Beach Post 85 and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3559. The festivities begin at 9:30 a.m. with a Washington Avenue parade, followed by a wreath-laying ceremony and 21-gun salute in Flamingo Park. The picnic takes place in the park at 11. All events are free. Contact Miami Beach Commissioner Jerry Libbin’s office at 305-673-7106 or jerry@miamibeachfl.gov.

A different kind of remembrance will happen in front of the Betsy Hotel (1440 Ocean Dr., Miami Beach), where the John Lennon Educational Tour Bus will be parked for a red-carpet premiere of a documentary about veterans, called Revisiting History: Honoring Soldiers and Their Families. The free screening begins at 4 p.m. Visit lennonbus.org or betsyhotel.com.
Wed., Nov. 11, 9:30 a.m. & 4 p.m., 2009
