Her Standards Are Classics

Sometimes Nicole Henry likes to make crowds of strangers think about lost love. Sometimes she likes to arouse them. And sometimes she just likes to make them celebrate. The Miami Beach jazz singer understands the power of music, and she has used classic songs to entertain audiences from South Florida to Osaka. “There’s a different power each song can bring to the stage and to me,” Henry says. “And I try to take that power and be creative with it.”

Henry, who began singing as a child in Philadelphia, says she prefers to perform classic jazz — mostly songs from the “great American songbook” mixed with a few originals — because of the music’s ability to tell stories and convey honest emotion. “I can relate to the lyrics honestly,” she says. “I don’t have to force myself to say, ‘OK, would I say these words or can I even feel these words?’” Watch Henry get in touch with her velvety-soft side this Friday at the Jazz at MOCA open-air concert at the Museum of Contemporary Art. The show begins at 8 p.m. and is free.
