Ooh, This Is So FLIFFy!

Jet packs are passé; imagine a future where you can get a wrist implant that counts down to the moment when you will meet your soulmate. Such is the case in TiMER, a sci-fi romantic comedy that opens the 24th annual Fort Lauderdale Film Festival. This Friday at 7 p.m. at the Rose & Alfred Miniaci Performing Arts Center, TiMER will kick off two and a half weeks of topnotch cinema. Tickets cost just $10, and TiMER’s director will be in attendance; the screening also includes a shorts program before the film. Shell out an extra $80 and you can also attend the opening-night gala at the Signature Grand at 9:30.

The festival runs through November 11 and includes a Florida film series (with a documentary about Key West drag queens); a screening of Pedro Almodóvar’s latest film, Broken Embraces; and an appearance by Matthew Broderick. Bueller? Bueller?
Oct. 23-Nov. 11, 7 p.m., 2009
