Dream in The Color Purple

Instead of catching a flight to the bright lights of Broadway, take a quick ride to Biscayne Boulevard to get your theater fix this season. And if you think that means the usual daily crackhead productions, you’re mistaken. The Arsht Center and Broadway Across America want to turn your cultural calendar from a boring brown to The Color Purple. This Tuesday through November 1, catch the Tony Award-winning play based on a Pulitzer Prize-winning novel by Alice Walker, the critically acclaimed film by Steven Spielberg, and — perhaps the (cough) highest honor — produced by Oprah Winfrey.

If prestigious awards and an endorsement from one of the world’s most influential women don’t get your butt in a theater seat, the incredible story will. Protagonist Celie is a woman who has been beaten down by the world and the men she has adored, but in the end, she finds her voice in a dramatic turnaround that can be described only as triumphant and well deserved. This Tuesday’s show begins at 8, and tickets range from $25 to $75.
Oct. 27-Nov. 1, 8 p.m., 2009
